Saint Francis Splits League Doubleheader with Indiana Wesleyan

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) Cougars split a Crossroads League doubleheader against visiting Indiana Wesleyan University on Saturday, March 21. Saint Francis won game one 11-9 before falling 9-2 in game two.

SAINT FRANCIS 11, INDIANA WESLEYAN 9

  • After Indiana Wesleyan drove in a run in the top of the first inning, Saint Francis responded with a big bottom half, using five RBI doubles to take a 5-1 lead.
  • The Wildcats answered in the second and fourth innings, pulling ahead 6-5.
  • A three-run home run from Bree Miller in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Cougars the lead.
  • Indiana Wesleyan retook the advantage in the top of the sixth with a triple and a single to drive in two runs and make it a 9-8 game.
  • The Cougars answered in the bottom half of the inning, using a bunt and a two-run home run to regain the lead.
  • Saint Francis held IWU scoreless in the seventh to secure the 11-9 victory, improving to 6-1 in Crossroads League play.
  • The Cougars recorded 16 hits in game one. Abby Robakowski, Macie Dowd and Haylee Schott each went 3-4 at the plate. Robakowski tallied a home run, two doubles and three RBI, while Dowd and Schott each had a double and combined for two RBI. Miller finished 2-for-4 with her first collegiate home run and a team-high four RBI. Paiton Iliff and Kortney Surber also drove in a run apiece, while Sam Baker added a stolen base.
  • In the circle, Ellie Sauder got the start, striking out two batters in 2.1 innings. Olivia Fuentes earned the win after striking out four and allowing three runs over 4.2 innings of relief.

INDIANA WESLEYAN 9, SAINT FRANCIS 2

  • The Cougars and Wildcats were tied 1-1 after the first inning, after Indiana Wesleyan used an RBI single and Saint Francis answered with an RBI double.
  • Indiana Wesleyan pulled ahead 4-1 after the third inning.
  • The Cougars responded in the bottom half of the inning with a run to cut the deficit to two.
  • IWU added five more runs across the fourth and sixth innings to secure the 9-2 win, splitting Saturday's doubleheader.
  • Saint Francis was held to two hits and four walks in game two. Robakowski went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Baker and Emma Howdeshell each scored a run, with Baker also recording her second stolen base of the day.
  • In the circle, Alexa Huth took the loss after striking out two batters and allowing seven hits in 3.0 innings. Kennedy Baioni and Schott combined for three strikeouts while giving up six hits in relief.

Up next, Saint Francis softball (10-6, 6-2 CL) will travel to Upland for two league games against Taylor University on Tuesday, March 24. First pitch for game one is set for 3:00 p.m.
