FORT WAYNE, Ind. - A late goal pushed the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) men's soccer team to a 3-2 upset victory over No. 24 Spring Arbor University during Homecoming Weekend at Bishop John M. D'Arcy Stadium on Saturday, September 27.
Spring Arbor (5-5-1, 1-1-0 CL) struck first in the 24th minute when Ian Lama finished a setup from David Magalhaes to give the SAU an early 1-0 lead. Saint Francis responded before halftime, as Henning Bundschuh netted the equalizer in the 37th minute off assists from Junior Happi and Jai Van Lim, sending the match into the break level at 1-1.
The second half saw a hard-fought battle from both sides. Magalhaes put Spring Arbor back on top in the 73rd minute with an unassisted strike. But the SF Cougars refused to back down, answering with two clutch goals in the final 10 minutes. Ryusei Matsushita delivered the tying goal in the 80th minute off a penalty kick, and just five minutes later, Bundschuh tallied his second of the day to secure the 3-2 victory.
Both sides finished with 10 shots apiece, while Saint Francis edged Spring Arbor in shots on goal, 6-5. SF goalkeeper Kevin Wachiaya Onelius made three saves to earn the win, improving his record to 3-7-1. Spring Arbor's Jack Cristini also recorded three saves in the loss.
