Lady Cougars Sweep Rochester & Oakland City for a quick 2-0 Start on the Season

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) women's volleyball team triumphed with a resounding three-set sweep against Rochester University. The Lady Cougars' dominant performance was highlighted by their impressive tally of 36 kills over the course of the match.

The match kicked off with the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) asserting their dominance from the very start. Set one concluded with a final score of 18-25 where Alexa Sparks got her start early as the team's sole setter of the match. Sparks tallied 28 assists in 3 sets while Alexis Gregory & Kellyn Bertsch recorded 3 aces a piece for the match victory.

Set two concluded with a 22-25 final score in favor of the Cougs and set three concluded with a 16-25 victory to secure the sweep.

Another key performance for the Cougars in match one came from Senior Ellie Ferris. Ferris assisted half the blocks the team tallied, starting her senior season off as a quote on quote, "brick wall." Paige Fortkamp also showcased her attacking prowess at the net, recording 16 kills in 3 sets for the Cougs.

After taking a match off, the Lady Cougars came back with some prowess to defeat the Mighty Oaks of Oakland City University in three sets. Set one, the Cougars demolished the Mighty Oaks 11-25. The Cougars took set two with a score of 18-25 and set three finished off with 17-25 final.

The offensive attack was led by Ellie Ferris, Paige Fortkamp, Addi Shafer, Caroline Jones, & Kate McMullen. The six cougars tallied 32 total kills while Alexa Sparks casually sprinkled in 24 assists. Jo Delsing, Emily Hughes, & Paige Fortkamp combined added in 9 service aces to the teams 13 total for the match.

Senior libero, Alexis Gregory, held things down in the back court for the Cougs tallying 10 digs while Ellie Ferris & Kate McMullen like-mindedly held the Mighty Oaks on their side of the net recording 4 assisted blocks together. 

The Lady Cougs will compete again tomorrow, August 18th, for the OnSet Invitational. USF will be off campus at the Allen County War Memorial where 15 other matches will also take place. The Cougars will play at 11am on Court two at Allen County against West Virginia Tech and return home to Hutzell Athletic Center for a 7pm first serve against Wayland Baptist University. The Lady Cougs are now 2-0 on the 2023 Season winning 6 consecutive sets.
