Cougars Roll Past Pilots

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team hosted Bethel University for a Crossroads League doubleheader on Monday, April 13. The Cougars took game one 14-3 in five innings before game two was suspended in the top of the fourth due to weather.

Bethel struck first with two runs in the opening inning. Saint Francis responded in the second, with Macie Dowd putting the Cougars on the board with a three-run home run to left field, and Abby Robakowski followed with an RBI single to give SF a 4-2 lead.

After the Pilots used a sacrifice fly in the third to trim the deficit to one, the Cougars answered with a big inning, scoring nine runs to extend the lead to 13-3. The inning was highlighted by two two-run doubles and a three-run home run.

Saint Francis added an RBI single in the fourth to push the lead to 14-3 and held Bethel scoreless in the fifth to secure the run-rule victory.

The Cougars totaled 15 hits and drew four walks in game one. Kortney Surber went 3-3 with two doubles and two RBI, while Dowd finished 2-2 with a double, a home run, and five RBI. Paiton Iliff added a home run and three RBI, and Haylee Schott recorded a double and scored three runs. Sam Baker, Emma Howdeshell, and Robakowski each drove in a run.

In the circle, Schott struck out four over 3.0 innings, allowing three hits and one walk. Ellie Sauder earned the save with two hitless innings of relief.

Game two will resume at a later date, with scheduling details to be announced.
