Cougars Suffer First Loss of the Season to Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – On Saturday afternoon the University of Saint Francis Cougars (6-1-1) played host to the Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines (3-2) at Bishop D'Arcy Stadium but didn't have enough as they fell 1-0 in a tense battle.
As the game got underway the Wolverines were the first ones to produce scoring opportunities, but the Cougars defense stepped up and prevented any shots on goal. The Cougars then had their first opportunity at the net but a hard shot by sophomore midfielder Simon Hemler was saved and the game remained scoreless in the early going.
But then in the 14th minute the Wolverines got a break and a long shot about 10 yards out went past junior goalkeeper Jaime Robledo to give Michigan-Dearborn a 1-0 lead.
Throughout the remainder of the first half, the Cougars kept battling and their aggressiveness created several more scoring chances and stops on defense, but they were not able to cash in as the game went to halftime with the Wolverines leading 1-0.
Heading into the second half both teams continued to battle, but a collision between two Cougars put Saint Francis in dire straits.
As the Cougars continued to battle now with one of their starters out, they had to scratch and claw to do everything they could to tie the game. Several corner kicks and shots on goal was as close as they came though as the Wolverines dealt them their first loss of the season.
Throughout the game the Cougars managed 12 shots with six on net while Jaime Robledo stepped in to make three saves.
The Cougars resume play on Wednesday evening when they travel to New Concord, Ohio to begin a road trip against the Muskingum University Fighting Huskies (1-3) beginning at 7:00 pm.
