Cougars Drop Home Opener to Jaguars

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) men's basketball team played host to the Governors State University Jaguars in their home opener at Hutzell Athletic Center Wednesday night. The Cougars trailed at the half, made a promising come-back, and fell in the final seconds to the Jaguars 86-83.

USF encountered some foul trouble early on in the contest, but were able to look towards their bench and create a spark in the final minutes of the second half. Zane Burke led in overall scoring for the Cougars tallying 19-points, 2 assists, 1 steal, & 3 rebounds. Burke went 4-for-4 from the line and shot just below 50% from the field.

Freshman, Luke Almodovar was a huge contributor off the bench, putting the Cougars within 2-points in the final seconds of the game and almost sparking the come-from-behind win. Almodovar ended with 17-points, 5 assists, 1 steal, & 4 rebounds. Charlie Yoder and Isaiah Malone also put in the work in the paint and combined for 26-points & 10 rebounds. Yoder and Jackson Gowdy grabbed 7 offensive boards as well for second chance points and offense for the Cougars.

The Cougars are now 2-1 overall and will look to reset to prepare for this Saturday's game. USF will resume again this Saturday (11/4) at Hutzell Athletic Center to host the Indiana University South Bend Titans. Tip-off is set for 1pm in Fort Wayne where the Cougars will look to defend the Hut once more. The Titans enter into Saturday's game 1-0 due to a victory over the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils (10/28), where the final score was 89-79. The last time these two sides faced-off against one another was in December of 2005 where the Cougars defeated the Titans 91-70.
