FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- On Thursday afternoon, The University of Saint Francis Cougars (26-21, 20-13) took on the Mount Vernon University Cougars (20-23, 15-18) in a doubleheader matchup winning both games 10-0 and 7-3. The game one win clinched 4th place for the Cougars for the Crossroads League Tournament double elimination bracket.
In the first game of the series, Riley Perlich took the mound to start for the Cougars. The game started off as a defensive battle as neither side of the offense could seem to get rolling. Then in the 4th inning, the USF Cougar offense exploded onto the scene. It began with a sacrifice fly, 2 singles, and then it was topped off with a David Miller grand-slam to make it 7-0. Then a little later, Nick Parsons would have his own 3-run home run to make it 10-0 in the 6th inning. Mount Vernon had no response to the Cougar dominance and would fall 10-0 as a result. Riley Perlich had himself a game allowing zero runs earned or hits on the day.
I'm the second game of the series, Blaine McRae started on the mound for the Cougars. The Cougars once again exploded onto the scene, as Nick Parsons hit a 2-run home run to make it 2-0 in the 1st inning. Then came an Eli Riley single and Jayden Lepper 3-run home run in the 2nd inning to make it a comfortable, 6-0. This time around Mount Vernon managed to muster a response hitting a sacrifice fly in the 4th to make it 1-6. But, the Cougars would respond with a Noah Mack single to go up 7-1. After that, the Cougars offense stalled out and Mount Vernon would try to take advantage with a single and an error to make it 7-3, but that would be all they could muster for a response. The Cougars won game two 7-3 and took the Thursday series.
