Women's Volleyball Stumbles at Grace
WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) women's volleyball team faced the Grace College Lancers in Crossroads League action on Wednesday, October 22, at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
The Lancers won Wednesday night's game by a final score of 3-0, with set scores of 25-13, 25-20, 25-11.
The two teams began the match by trading points evenly in the first set. After Saint Francis took a 13-11 lead, Grace responded with a scoring run to reclaim the lead, extending it to five points with a score of 18-13. The Lancers closed out the set, winning the first set and taking a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set two was a back-and-forth battle, with Saint Francis and Grace tying the score six times before SF tied it again at 18-18. The Cougars tried to rally after Grace managed to pull ahead 21-18, but Saint Francis would come up short in set two as the Lancers extended their advantage to 2-0 in the match.
Grace carried their momentum into the third set. The Cougars were unable to slow the Lancers' offense that collected 14 kills on a .286 hitting percentage to win set three and close out the match. With the win, Grace improves to 13-12 overall and 6-7 in Crossroads League play.
Saint Francis finished the match with 23 kills as a team, with sophomore Kayla Gumbel leading the way with eight. Teigen Fortkamp finished with 20 assists, 11 digs and three block assists. Hannah Sweeney had a team-high 13 digs, while Annabelle Sweigert recorded five block assists.
Up next, Saint Francis volleyball (4-21,0-13 CL) will return to the Hutzell Athletic Center for a home league match against Spring Arbor University on Saturday, October 25. In their first meeting of the season, SAU won the game 3-0, with set scores of 25-18, 25-13, 25-12.
