Cougars Fall in Five to Maple Leafs

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) women's volleyball team faced off against the visiting Maple Leafs from Goshen College in a competitive five-set match in the Crossroads League on Saturday, October 18.

Goshen won the match 3-2 with set scores of 23-25, 25-15, 25-20, 21-25, and 10-15.

The Maple Leafs started the match strong, jumping out to a 6-2 lead in the first set. The Cougars made a comeback, cutting Goshen's lead to just one point at 12-11. The two teams battled back and forth, tying the score again at 22-22. A kill by the Cougars pushed the Maple Leafs to call a timeout. Goshen then answered, capitalizing on a service error and two kills to win set one. 

In the second set, Saint Francis rallied, taking a 20-14 lead and forcing the Maple Leafs to call a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, SF extended its lead with back-to-back kills before closing out the set with a 3-1 run, securing a 25-15 win in the second set.

After hitting .357 in set two, the Cougars maintained their momentum in set three, holding off the Maple Leafs to win the set 25-20, giving them a 2-1 advantage in the match.

Goshen responded in the fourth set, winning 25-21 and tying the match at 2-2 and forcing a fifth set.

In the fifth set, the Maple Leafs grabbed an early 5-1 lead. The Cougars came back to cut Goshen's lead, but the Maple Leafs hung on to win the set and the match. With the win, Goshen improved to 7-19 overall and 2-11 in league play.

As a team, SF tallied 57 kills, 69 digs, eight block assists and five service aces. Three Cougars finished with double-digit kills, including Annabelle Sweigert with 14 kills and a .462 hitting percentage, Kendal Frey with 13 kills and Kayla Gumbel with 12 kills. Gumbel also had four digs and three block assists. Sophomore Teigen Fortkamp finished with 46 assists and 13 digs, while Hannah Sweeney had 20 digs. 

Up next, Saint Francis volleyball (4-21, 0-13 CL) will hit the road for a Crossroads League match at Grace College on October 22.
