FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) women's volleyball team hosted No. 22 Marian University for a Crossroads League game in the Hutzell Athletic Center on Saturday, October 11.
Marian won Saturday's match 3-0, with set scores of 25-20, 25-14, 25-9.
After the two teams opened the match by trading points in the first set, Saint Francis grabbed a 12-8 lead thanks to an attacking error by Marian and a kill by SF. Marian answered to tie the game up before taking the lead back. With the score at 20-17 in favor of the Knights, SF came back to cut the deficit to two, but Marian hung on to narrowly win set one 25-20.
Marian used a kill and an ace to pull ahead early, with the score at 10-5 in set two. The Cougars tried to rally but were unable to stop the Knights, as Marian won set two for a 2-0 match advantage.
The third set saw a strong offensive performance from Marian, with the Knights hitting .450 en route to a 25-9 victory to seal the 3-0 win in the match.
Kayla Gumbel led the Cougars with 12 kills, hitting .233 against the Knights. Kendal Frey added six kills and a solo block, while Teigen Fortkamp finished with 22 assists. Hannah Sweeney led the team in digs with 14.
Up next, the Cougars (4-19, 0-11) will travel to No. 6 Indiana Wesleyan for a mid-week league match on October 15. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Marion, Indiana.
