Sweeney Passes 1,000 Career Digs as Cougars Battle #22 Trojans

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Senior libero Hannah Sweeney surpassed 1,000 career digs as the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) women's volleyball team battled No. 22 Taylor University inside the Hutzell Athletic Center on Wednesday, September 24. 

The Trojans (14-5, 5-2 CL) won Wednesday night's match by a final score of 3-0, with set scores of 25-15, 26-24, 25-11.

Taylor started the match strong, taking a 15-9 lead in the opening set. The Cougars capitalized on back-to-back errors by the Trojans to narrow the gap, but Taylor held on for the first set victory.

The two teams battled back and forth in the second set. SF forced an early timeout from Taylor after a 5-0 run put them up 9-4. With the score tied at 20-20, Saint Francis pulled ahead by three to make it set point in favor of SF. The Trojans answered to tie the game up 24-24. Taylor continued their late run to win the second set 26-24.

With her third dig of the third set, Sweeney reached 1,000 career digs as Saint Francis started set three strong, taking a 7-3 lead. Taylor rallied to tie the score before retaking the lead en route to a 25-11 set three win to take the match. 

The Cougars finished with 30 kills and 49 digs on Wednesday night. Annabelle Sweigert and Kendal Frey led SF with eight kills each. Sweigert also finished with a .278 hitting percentage and two block assists. Teigen Fortkamp recorded 25 assists, while Sweeney had a match-high 20 digs. 

Up next, Saint Francis volleyball (4-15, 0-7 CL) will face Bethel University in a road league match on Saturday, September 27.
