Women's Volleyball Edged in Five Sets at Goshen

GOSHEN, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) women's volleyball team lost in five sets to the Goshen College Maple Leafs during a Crossroads League road match on Saturday, September 13.

Goshen (5-9, 1-3 CL) secured the victory with set scores of 25-14, 18-25, 22-25, 28-26, and 11-15.

Saint Francis took control of the first set, jumping to a 20-9 lead. The Maple Leafs tried to put together a rally, but the Cougars' offense helped push SF to a 25-14 win, giving them an early lead in the match.

In the second set, Goshen hit .310 as they rallied to tie the match at 1-1.

During the third set, with the score at 15-9 in favor of Saint Francis, Goshen came back to tie it at 18-18. After gaining a 23-22 advantage, the Maple Leafs closed out the third set with a three-point win, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set saw both teams battling back and forth. With the score tied at 22-22, Saint Francis pulled ahead by two points to make it set point. However, Goshen fought back, forcing the set into extra points. The Cougars capitalized on a service and attacking error by Goshen to win the fourth set, tying the match at 2-2.

In the closely contested fifth set, two attacking errors from Goshen allowed Saint Francis to tie the score at 11-11. Goshen responded with a 4-0 run to win the fifth set and take the match.

The Cougars recorded 46 kills, 11 service aces, and 11 total blocks. Annabelle Sweigert led the team with 11 kills and a .269 attacking percentage, along with a solo block and two block assists. Kendal Frey contributed 10 kills, while Teigen Fortkamp had a match-high 37 assists and two solo blocks. Hannah Sweeney and Kellyn Bertsch both finished with double-digit digs, with Sweeney recording 16 digs and Bertsch adding 12. Isabel Freese also recorded a team-high five aces during Saturday's match.

Next up, Saint Francis volleyball (4-12, 0-4) will host Grace College for a home league match on Wednesday, September 17, at 7:00 p.m.
