SF Drops League Opener at Huntington

HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) women's volleyball team opened Crossroads League play at Huntington University on Wednesday, September 3. 

The Cougars fell to the Foresters by a final score of 3-1, with set scores of 23-25, 25-22, 13-25, 11-25. 

After Huntington won the opening set, Saint Francis started strong in the second set with a 5-0 run, establishing an early lead. The two teams battled back and forth until the Cougars pulled ahead with a 21-16 advantage. Saint Francis managed to hold off Huntington and won the second set, tying the match at 1-1.

The Foresters hit .333 in set three with a match-high 13 kills as Huntington retook the match lead with a set two victory. 

The Cougars tried to rally in the third set, but would fall short as Huntington won the match 3-1 to improve to 10-1 on the season. 

As a team, Saint Francis had 33 kills and 12 block assists. Annabelle Sweigert led SF with nine kills and a .467 attacking percentage. Kayla Gumbel followed with seven kills. Both Sweigert and Gumbel also recorded three block assists against the Foresters. Teigen Fortkamp finished with 26 assists and 10 digs, while Hannah Sweeney led the team with 15 digs.

Up next, Saint Francis (4-9, 0-1) will travel to Indianapolis to face No. 16 Marian University on Saturday, September 6.
