Saint Francis Falls in Final Day of Onset Invitational

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) women's volleyball team closed out the 2025 Onset Invitational with matches against the (RV) University of Cumberlands and (RV) Cornerstone University. 

(RV) CUMBERLANDS 3, SAINT FRANCIS 0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-12)

In their first match of the day, Saint Francis faced Cumberlands, who is receiving votes in the NAIA Preseason Poll.

The Cougars struggled offensively as the Patriots grabbed a 16-8 lead in set one. Although Saint Francis attempted a rally, the Coguars fell short, with Cumberlands winning the set 25-12, taking a 1-0 lead in the match.

The two teams fought back and forth in the second set. After Cumberlands took an 11-9 lead, the Cougars answered with a 4-0 run to retake the lead and force an early timeout by the Patriots. The Patriots came back to take a six-point lead, with the score at 21-15. SF fought back once more with another 4-0 run, narrowing the gap to just two points. The Patriots managed to hold on and narrowly claimed the second set 25-22.

Cumberlands again took an early lead in the third set. The Cougars were unable to cut the Patriots' lead down as Saint Francis fell in set three, 25-12.

The Cougars recorded 27 kills as a team, with freshman Daihya Chupp leading SF with 8 kills. Teigen Fortkamp finished with 16 assists and a solo block, while Hannah Sweeney had a team-high 13 digs.

(RV) CORNERSTONE 3, SAINT FRANCIS 0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-14)

Saint Francis's next match of the day was against Cornerstone, a team also receiving votes in the NAIA Preseason Poll.

The Cougars and the Golden Eagles traded points to open the first set of the match. After the score reached 8-8, Cornerstone managed to take the lead and extend it to 20-15. The Cougars rallied to narrow Cornerstone's lead to 18-24, but the Golden Eagles would come out on top 25-18 in the opening set. 

In the second set, Saint Francis and Cornerstone continued to battle back and forth. With the Cougars down by three, the Golden Eagles were able to capitalize and extend their lead to six, bringing the score to 21-15. SF was unable to catch up, and the Cougars lost set two 25-18.

Cornerstone maintained its momentum into the third set, quickly establishing an early lead. Despite the Cougars' efforts to rally, the Golden Eagles held on to win the third set and the match with a final score of 3-0.

Saint Francis finished the match with 26 kills, five service aces and eight total blocks. Annabelle Sweigert hit .333 with nine kills while adding two block assists. Fortkamp led with 17 assists, and Sweeney recorded 12 digs. Kendal Frey and Kate McMullen both contributed a solo block against the Golden Eagles.

Up next, Saint Francis women's volleyball (4-4) will travel to Omaha, Neb. to compete in the CSM Labor Day Classic on August 29-30. When the Cougars return home to Indiana, they will start Crossroads League play with a match at Huntington University on September 3.
