Steckelberg Wins Libero of the Year & Four Other Cougars Honored in Crossroads League Season Awards
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis athletic department is excited to announce that five members of the USF Volleyball team have been honored as the Crossroads League announces the 2022 season award winners.
Representing the Cougars were senior defensive specialist/libero Maile Steckelberg, junior right side Haidyn Carrico, sophomore outside hitter Paige Fortkamp, senior defensive specialist Kylie Topp, and senior middle hitter Shelby Mosier.
The biggest honor went to Maile Steckelberg who was named the 2022 Crossroads League Libero of the Year. Throughout the season, Steckelberg was a leader on and off the court as she helped guide the Cougars to another berth in the conference tournament. In 126 sets played, she totaled 39 service aces, 80 assists, 475 receptions, and led the team by a long shot with 609 digs. The senior stud was also named to the 2022 First-Team All-Crossroads League.
"We are super excited and very proud to see Maile win the Crossroads League Libero of the Year Award," Head Coach Scott Haddix said. "She was a menace on the court, stealing so many points from other teams with her intellect and hustle while also shrinking the court to opposing servers with her serve receive skills. She is a dynamic volleyball player, quality student and just a wonderful human being...eveything you want in a recruit. We will miss her and her charasmatic smile greatly!"
In addition to Steckelberg, Paige Fortkamp was also named to the first team. Fresh off of winning conference freshman of the year last year, the sophomore phenom picked up where she left off igniting the Cougars with 123 digs herself, 42 blocks, 926 attacks, and a team-leading 326 kills.
Representing the Cougars on the Second-Team All-Crossroads League was Haidyn Carrico who was always dependable from the right side. During the season, Carrico totaled 42 blocks, 740 attacks, and was not far behind Fortkamp with 234 kills.
A couple of honorable mentions from the Cougars were Kylie Topp and Shelby Mosier. Topp totaled 513 receptions and 264 digs herself while also compiling 10 service aces. Mosier finished fourth on the team with 191 kills to go along with 71 blocks.
