FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) Cougars finished with a 3-1 win over the visiting Red Wolves from Indiana University East on Saturday, September 6. Saint Francis moves to 5-1-0 on the season after picking up their third win in a row while under the lights at Bishop John M. D'Arcy Stadium.
Indiana East struck first, netting a goal in the ninth minute for the early 1-0 lead. With 22:23 on the clock, Evelyn Harkenrider connected with junior forward Hailey Stanforth, who put the ball in the back right corner of the net to tie the score up 1-1. The Cougars then took the lead with an unassisted goal from Grace Hein with just under six minutes left to play in the first half. The SF defense held off a pair of corner kick opportunities from the Red Wolves as the Cougars went into halftime ahead 2-1.
In the second half, Saint Francis and Indiana East continued to battle, with the Red Wolves pushing to equalize. In the 89th minute of action, Harkenrider took control of the ball, dribbled it down the field and shot it into the net, extending the Cougars' lead. Saint Francis would stop the Red Wolves' attack to win Saturday's matchup 3-1.
Saint Francis held a 13-9 advantage in shots, with 11 of those shots on target for the Cougars. Saint Francis also had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Harkenrider led the team with all three of her shots on goal, while Madison Meeks and Haley Roberson each contributed two shots on goal. Sophomore Rachel Bova secured her fourth win in goal, making six saves during the match.
The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday, September 10, when they travel to Trinity Christian College for a non-conference matchup against the Trolls at 3:30 p.m.
