Cougars Struggles Continue Against Mount Vernon Cougars

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The University of Saint Francis Cougars (2-10-1; 0-6 Crossroads) played host to the Mount Vernon Nazarene University Cougars (6-6-1; 3-2-1 Crossroads) Saturday evening at Bishop D'Arcy Stadium in a Crossroads League match but could not produce enough offense falling 2-0.

As the game got underway, Mount Vernon began applying the pressure consistently. Senior goalkeeper Melanie Xouris stepped up in the first several minutes to make a couple saves, but her third attempt at a save fell short as the Cougars fell behind 1-0 in the fifth minute.

Throughout the next several minutes the Cougars had to continue playing strong defense as Mount Vernon would not go away.

A couple more shots saved by Xouris and a defensive team save kept the Cougars down by just one, but then Mount Vernon doubled the lead on their fourth shot on goal in the 16th minute.

The game went to halftime with Saint Francis trailing Mount Vernon 2-0.

In the second half, a couple more offensive opportunities presented themselves to the Cougars, but they couldn't get a clear shot on goal.

Defensively, the Cougars and Xouris made some stellar plays to keep the score at two goals, but no other scoring was done as the Cougars were dealt the tough loss.

Throughout the game, the Cougars managed just one shot while Xouris made six saves on nine shots on goal with another being a team save.

The Cougars resume play next Saturday afternoon when they travel to Marion, Indiana for a road conference match against the No. 8 Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats (10-2; 5-0 Crossroads) beginning at 4:00 pm.
