Jones uses her head to trip #20 MVNU in OT

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Now that is what you call a Senior moment.

University of Saint Francis senior Heather Jones scored what may have been the most important goal of her career giving the Lady Cougars a 2-1 overtime victory over 20th-ranked Mt. Vernon Nazarene University on Friday night. Jones nodded a cross from Hannah Elzinga just over the MVNU keeper at 96:45 igniting a crazy USF celebration.

"A beautiful goal, a goal you expect from a senior, and I couldn't be happier for Heather," USF Head Coach Christy Young said. "Our team worked so hard and it was great to see it pay off. Jill Burkholder sent the ball to Hannah Elzinga who put it in a perfect spot that enabled Heather to somehow beat their keeper to the ball."

It was Jones 17th career game winner, her 47th career goal and moved her up to fifth alone on the USF list of career points with 101.

Most importantly, USF is 1-0 in Crossroads League play. Overall USF is 7-3.

MVNU led 1-0 until senior Emily Richardson scored her second goal in three matches at 81:14 off a free kick from Burkholder.

Sophomore Morgan Hammon started at keeper for the first time this season after an injury the day before USF's first game of the season kept her sidelined for the entire non-conference schedule. She finished with four saves to earn her first win between the pipes this season. Rachel Baker scored at 6:43, but that was all Hammon yielded.

MVNU (7-3, 0-1 CL) got seven saves from Madi Moore. MVNU entered the match with five consecutive wins and a 13-0 scoring advantage in its last four matches.

Jones and Baker entered the match Friday night tied for second in CL goal-scoring with seven apiece.
