Cougars Sweep Foresters in Crossroads League Doubleheader

HUNTINGTON, Ind. -The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team earned a Crossroads League doubleheader sweep at Huntington University on Saturday, March 28, winning game one 7-3 before taking game two 6-3.

SAINT FRANCIS 7, HUNTINGTON 3

  • Saint Francis opened Saturday's first game with an RBI single followed by an RBI double to take an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Huntington answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Cougars' lead to 2-1.
  • Saint Francis added a run in each of the next three innings to extend its lead to 5-1.
  • After Huntington plated a run in the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars responded with two RBI singles in the fifth to push the lead to 7-2.
  • Saint Francis held off the Foresters to secure the 7-3 game one victory.
  • The Cougars finished with nine hits and three walks. Haylee Schott and Lena Viggiano both went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI each. Paiton Iliff and Madyson Minnich recorded extra-base hits, while Minnich, Macie Dowd and Bree Miller also drove in runs.
  • In the circle, Ellie Sauder struck out five batters while allowing four hits and one earned run in 3.2 innings. Schott added four strikeouts, holding the Foresters to one hit in 3.1 innings of relief.

SAINT FRANCIS 6, HUNTINGTON 3

  • The Foresters got on the scoreboard first in game two, taking advantage of a Saint Francis error to drive in a run in the second inning.
  • Saint Francis responded with three runs across the third and fourth innings to take a 3-1 lead
  • Huntington rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning.
  • The Cougars retook the lead in the top of the fifth with two RBI singles to make it a 5-3 game.
  • An RBI single to right field in the seventh extended Saint Francis's lead to 6-3, as the Cougars secured the game two win and completed the doubleheader sweep.
  • Saint Francis finished with 13 hits and three walks in game two. Abby Robakowski went 2-2 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Emma Howdeshell and Lena Viggiano each went 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Iliff, Sam Baker and Lillian Pierce each had a stolen base, while Baker and Minnich also added doubles.
  • In the circle, Olivia Fuentes threw 6.0 innings, striking out three while allowing five hits and two earned runs. Alexa Huth recorded a strikeout and allowed no runs in 1.0 inning of relief.

Up next, the Cougars (15-7, 11-3 CL) will face Bethel University in Crossroads League action on Monday, March 30. Game one of Monday's doubleheader is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. in Mishawaka.
