Softball Upsets No. 14 Marian on Senior Day; Robakowski Breaks Single Season Home Run Record

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team rallied in game two to upset the visiting No. 14 Marian University Knights during Senior Day at Westendorf Field on Saturday, April 26.

In the bottom of the first inning of game two, Abby Robakowski hit her 14th home run of the season, setting a new USF school record for homers in a single season.

After the doubleheader, the Saint Francis softball team honored its senior class. 

MARIAN 8, SAINT FRANCIS 0 

  • Marian jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the third inning after hitting a home run, a triple and a single. 
  • The Knights scored three more runs in the top of the seventh inning to extend their lead to 8-0. 
  • Marian kept the Cougars off the scoreboard as the Knights won game one. 
  • Saint Francis was limited to two hits and two walks. Anna Smith and Macie Dowd both went 1-3 at the plate. Dowd had a double to center field in the top of the sixth inning. 
  • Mia Werner took the loss after giving up five hits and five runs in 1.1 innings pitched. 
  • Kennedy Baioni recorded a strikeout in 5.2 innings of relief. 

SAINT FRANCIS 3, MARIAN 2

  • With one out in the bottom of the first inning, Robakowski hit a home run over the center field fence to break the single-season home run record and give Saint Francis the 1-0 lead. 
  • After Marian tied the game up 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning, Madyson Minnich hit an RBI single up the middle to give Saint Francis back a one-run lead. 
  • Robakowski doubled down the left field line to score Kortney Surber and extend USF's lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. 
  • Marian used a sac fly to make it a one-run game, but the Cougars held off the Knights as Saint Francis secured the 3-2 upset win to close out Senior Day. 
  • The Cougars had seven hits in game two, with Robakowski going 2-3 a the plate with two RBI, a double, a homer and a run scored. Minnich hit 1-3 with an RBI, while Paiton Iliff and Haylee Schott both had sacrifice bunts in game two. 
  • Ellie Sauder earned the win in the circle after striking out a pair of batters while holding the Knights to two runs in a complete seven innings pitched. 

Up next, USF softball (26-18, 19-15) will travel to Taylor University for a Crossroads League doubleheader in the Cougars' regular season finale on Monday, April 28. Game one is slated for 4:00 p.m. in Upland, Ind.
