Cougars Top Lancers in Monday Night Road Doubleheader

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The Cougars of the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team earned two wins over Grace College in a road doubleheader on Monday, April 21. 

USF won game one by a final score of 12-2 in six innings before beating the Lancers 15-7 in game two for the Monday night sweep. 

SAINT FRANCIS 12, GRACE 2 (6 INNINGS)

  • Haylee Schott singled to center field, scoring Paiton Iliff and Abby Robakowski to give USF the 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. 
  • The Lancers responded with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the Cougars' lead to 2-1. 
  • After a sacrifice bunt from Lillian Pierce put runners in scoring position, Kortney Surber hit an RBI triple to right field to make the score 3-1. Robakowski followed with an RBI double to center field, allowing Saint Francis to take a 4-1 lead after the second inning.
  • The Cougars put together a big fourth inning, scoring five runs to extend their lead to 9-1. Iliff got the scoring started with a two-run home run to left field, followed by a solo shot from Robakowski and a homer from Macie Dowd. Pierce then drew a bases-loaded walk, bringing in USF's fifth run of the inning. 
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning, Grace used an RBI single to right field to add another run, making the score 9-2. 
  • Saint Francis answered with singles from Brooklyn McCord and Surber, scoring three more runs and making it a 10-run game in the top of the sixth inning.
  • A quick three-up, three-down inning for the Cougars prevented the Lancers from scoring, resulting in a 12-2 run-rule victory for Saint Francis in game one.
  • As a team, USF recorded 12 hits and four walks. Surber and Robakowski both went 3-4 at the plate. Surber had three RBI and a triple, while Robakowski had her 12th home run of the season and two RBI. Schott, Iliff and Dowd all drove in two runs each and had extra-base hits against the Lancers. Madisyn Miller hit 2-3 with two runs scored and Madyson Minnich had a stolen base. 
  • Ellie Sauder earned the win after striking out four batters while giving up six hits and two runs in six innings as the Cougars' starting pitcher. 

SAINT FRANCIS 15, GRACE 7

  • The Cougars' offensive momentum continued in game two, with USF scoring four runs in the top of the first inning, thanks to a pair of two-run home runs hit by Robakowski and Schott
  • In the bottom half of the first inning, Grace responded with an RBI double to right field, scoring a run and cutting the Cougars' lead to three.
  • Minnich hit an RBI single to second base to add to USF's total, bringing the score to 5-1.
  • After Grace scored three runs in the bottom of the second, Iliff hit a sac fly to left field to bring the score to 6-4 in favor of the Cougars in the top of the third inning. 
  • Saint Francis capitalized on a Lancers' error to score another run. Surber and Dowd then hit RBI singles to make it a five-run game in the top of the fourth inning.  
  • The Lancers used a home run to right field and a USF error to bring the score to 9-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning. 
  • Dowd hit a sacrifice fly, followed by an RBI walk from McCord and a three-run double from Miller to extend Saint Francis's lead to 14-6 in the sixth inning. 
  • Grace hit an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 14-7. 
  • With two outs in the top of the seventh, Robakowski hit a home run over the center field fence to give the Cougars an eight-run lead. 
  • Saint Francis held Grace from scoring in the last inning as USF secured the 15-7 win to improve to 17-11 in league play and complete the doubleheader sweep. 
  • The Cougars had 18 hits and six walks in game two. Robakowski went 2-2 at the plate with four runs scored, three RBI and two home runs. Surber and Minnich both hit 3-5 with a combined three runs scored and an RBI each. Surber, Iliff, Dowd, Millerand Schott all had extra-base hits, while Miller had a team-high four RBI. Minnich, Pierce and Surber all also had stolen bases in Monday night's second game. 
  • Alexa Huth got the win after throwing 5.1 innings, recording five strikeouts and allowing seven hits. 
  • Mady Tompkins held Grace to one hit in 1.2 innings of relief in game two. 

Up next, USF softball (24-14, 17-11) will travel to Huntington University to face the Foresters in a league doubleheader on Tuesday, April 22.
