FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis softball team hosted Mount Vernon Nazarene for a mid-week Crossroads League doubleheader on Wednesday, April 16.
MVNU escaped with a 2-1 win in eight innings in game one. USF rallied in game two, winning the game by a final score of 7-3.
MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE 2, SAINT FRANCIS 1 (8 INNINGS)
- Madyson Minnich capitalized on an error by Mount Vernon Nazarene to reach base and score Abby Robakowski, giving USF a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
- MVNU was held scoreless through six innings until they hit a home run to right field, tying the game at 1-1.
- The USF Cougars were unable to score in the bottom half of the inning, which forced the game into extra innings.
- In the top of the eighth, Mount Vernon Nazarene used a sacrifice bunt and a single to right field to bring in a run.
- Saint Francis was unable to score in the eighth inning, and MVNU won the first game with a final score of 2-1.
- As a team, USF recorded four hits and three walks. Robakowski went 1-3 at the plate with a run scored, while Lillian Pierce hit 1-2 and had a sacrifice bunt. Madisyn Miller also contributed with a sacrifice bunt in game one.
- Ellie Sauder suffered the loss after pitching all eight innings, striking out three batters and allowing five hits.
SAINT FRANCIS 7, MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE 3
- MVNU scored first, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning to take an early lead.
- In the third inning, Robakowski hit a double to left field, bringing in two runs, followed by an RBI from Miller that gave Saint Francis a 3-2 lead.
- The USF Cougars used a single up the middle from Robakowski, followed by a double from Macie Dowd, a triple from Minnich and a double from Miller to score four more runs as USF put together a big fourth inning to take a five-run lead.
- Mount Vernon Nazarene would not score again until the sixth inning when they used a single to right field to drive in a run and make the score 7-3 in favor of USF.
- Saint Francis held off MVNU to win game two, splitting Wednesday night's doubleheader.
- USF had eight hits in game two, with Robakowski hitting 2-3 with a double, three RBI two runs scored and a stolen base. Dowd and Minnich both hit 2-4 at the plate with an RBI and extra-base hit each. Miller added a double and two RBI.
- Alexa Huth struck out five batters while allowing five hits and two runs in five innings in the circle for USF.
- Mady Tompkins threw two innings of relief, recording two strikeouts and giving up two hits.
Up next, Saint Francis softball (22-12, 15-9) will host No. 12 Indiana Wesleyan University for a doubleheader at Westendorf Field on Thursday, April 17 starting at 3:00 p.m. USF and IWU split their first doubleheader meeting of the season, with the Wildcats winning game one 13-0 before the Cougars rallied to take upset IWU 12-10.
