(RV) Cougars Fall on the Road to Maple Leafs

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - The (RV) University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team fell on the road to Goshen College in a Crossroads League doubleheader on Saturday, April 12. 

The Maple Leafs narrowly won game one 3-2 before taking game two by a final score of 6-1. 

GOSHEN 3, SAINT FRANCIS 2

  • The Maple Leafs opened Saturday's game with a home run to left field, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the second inning, Goshen added two more runs, extending their lead to 3-0.
  • With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, Macie Dowd stepped up to the plate and hit a solo home run to left field, putting the Cougars on the scoreboard and narrowing Goshen's lead to two runs.
  • In the top of the seventh inning, Kortney Surber hit a double to center field, scoring Lillian Pierce and bringing USF within one run.
  • Saint Francis's rally was cut short as Goshen held on for the 3-2 win in game one.
  • USF recorded four hits and five walks. Dowd went 1-3 at the plate with her fourth homer of the season. Surber hit 2-3 with the extra-base hit and an RBI.
  • Ellie Sauder struck out four batters and allowed eight hits in six innings of work in the circle. 

GOSHEN 6, SAINT FRANCIS 1

  • Haylee Schott led off the second inning for the Cougars with a solo shot to left field to put USF up 1-0. 
  • The Maple Leafs added four more runs in the fifth and sixth innings, extending their lead to 6-1.
  • USF was unable to put together a rally, and Goshen completed the doubleheader sweep with a final score of 6-1 in game two.
  • Saint Francis was held to just two hits in game two. Schott went 1-2 at the plate with her first homer of the season. Dowd had a sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning. 
  • Alexa Huth threw 4.2 innings as USF's starting pitcher, sticking out two batters and scattering nine hits. 
  • Mady Tompkins struck out a pair of batters in 1.1 innings of relief. 

Up next, USF softball (21-11, 14-8) will host Mount Vernon Nazarene University for a league doubleheader on Tuesday, April 15. In their first meeting of the season, Saint Francis won game one 11-1 before dropping game two 6-0.
