(RV) Saint Francis Splits with Spring Arbor on the Road
SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team split a road doubleheader at Spring Arbor University on Saturday, April 5.
USF, who is receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Poll, rallied to win game two by a final score of 6-2 after falling 5-0 to SAU in game one.
SPRING ARBOR 5, SAINT FRANCIS 0
- USF and SAU played through three scoreless innings until Spring Arbor scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking a 2-0 lead.
- SAU scored again in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 5-0.
- Saint Francis was unable to score as Spring Arbor won Friday's first game.
- As a team, the USF Cougars had four hits and four walks, with Madyson Minnich going 2-3 at the plate with a double. Paiton Iliff and Kortney Surber both hit 1-2 with an extra-base hit each.
- Mady Tompkins struck out three batters while scattering four hits over four innings.
- Kennedy Baioni added to the effort with one strikeout and three hits in two innings of relief.
SAINT FRANCIS 6, SPRING ARBOR 2
- Lillian Pierce hit a double to left-center, driving in three runs and putting the USF Cougars ahead 3-0 in the top of the first inning of game two.
- Spring Arbor responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning, narrowing USF's lead to one run.
- Macie Dowd's single to the left side brought in another run for Saint Francis, making the score 4-2 in favor of the Cougars.
- Saint Francis capitalized on an error by Spring Arbor to drive in another run, followed by a sacrifice fly from Madisyn Miller to give USF the 6-2 lead in the seventh inning.
- USF held Spring Arbor scoreless in the bottom half of the final inning to secure the 6-2 victory.
- As a team, Saint Francis recorded 14 hits in Friday's second game. Brooklyn McCord went 4-4 at the plate, while Minnich hit 3-3 with an extra-base hit. Pierce had three RBI, a double and a sac bunt. Abby Robakowski went 2-3 at the plate with a double and a walk. Dowd and Miller both had doubles and an RBI.
- Alexa Huth got the win as USF's starting pitcher, collecting four strikeouts and allowing four hits in four innings pitched.
- Ellie Sauder held SAU scoreless after giving up just three hits in three innings of relief.
Up next, USF softball (21-9, 14-6) will host Huntington College on Friday, April 11.
