Saint Francis Falls on the Road to No. 11 Marian

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team fell on the road to the No. 11 Knights of Marian University in a Crossroads League doubleheader on Tuesday, April 1. 

Marian won game one by a final score of 7-3 before taking game two from the Cougars 7-1. 

MARIAN 7, SAINT FRANCIS 3

  • In the bottom of the second inning, Marian hit a two-run double, taking an early 2-0 lead.
  • The Knights added four more runs in the third inning, extending their lead to six runs before scoring again in the fourth inning, making the score 7-0.
  • In the top of the fifth inning, with one out and runners on first and second, Paiton Iliff hit a home run to left center, cutting the Knights' lead to 7-3.
  • However, the Cougars' rally fell short as Marian won the first game 7-3.
  • Saint Francis recorded five hits and four walks during the game. Iliff went 1-for-3 at the plate, hitting her sixth homer of the season and driving in three runs while also drawing a walk. Macie Dowd contributed with a double to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • Alexa Huth threw three innings as the Cougars' starting pitcher, collecting two strikeouts while scattering eight hits.

MARIAN 7, SAINT FRANCIS 1

  • Marian used a strong second inning to take a 5-0 lead in game two on Tuesday's doubleheader.
  • The Knights added another run in the fifth inning, increasing their lead to 6-0.
  • With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, sophomore third baseman Abby Robakowski hit a home run down the left field line, putting the Cougars on the scoreboard and cutting Marian's lead to five runs.
  • An RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Marian a 7-1 advantage, and they went on to win game two, improving to 15-3 in league play.
  • The Cougars had five hits in game two, with Dowd going 2-3 at the plate with an extra-base hit. Robakowski hit 1-3 with her eighth home run. 
  • Mady Tompkins started in the circle, striking out one batter while giving up five hits in two innings pitched. 

Up next, USF softball (18-8, 11-5) is scheduled to host Bethel University for two games on Friday, April 4 starting at 3:00 p.m.
