Cougars Make it Seven Straight with Sweep of Maple Leafs

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - After sweeping the Maple Leafs of Goshen College, the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team extended their win streak to seven on Friday, March 28. 

The Cougars earned a walk-off 4-3 win in game one before cutting game two short with a 9-1 run-rule victory to complete the sweep. 

SAINT FRANCIS 4, GOSHEN 3

  • The Maple Leafs took an early lead in the top of the first inning, driving in two runs with a single up the middle.
  • Abby Robakowski hit a solo shot to center field to cut Goshen's lead to one in the bottom of the first. 
  • In the bottom of the second inning, the Cougars capitalized on a Maple Leafs error, allowing them to score another run and tie the game at 2-2.
  • Brooklyn McCord then hit a ground ball to the second baseman that allowed Madyson Minnich to score to give USF the 3-2 lead. 
  • Goshen fought back, plating another run in the top of the sixth inning to bring the score to 3-3.
  • Saint Francis responded with a decisive three-up, three-down inning in the top of the seventh, preventing Goshen from scoring.
  • Robakowski led off the bottom half of the inning, where she hit her second home run of the day as the Cougars walked off with game one by a final score of 4-3.
  • Saint Francis had seven hits in game one, with Robakowski going 3-3 at the plate with a double, two home runs, two RBI and a walk. Minnich went 3-3 at the plate with two runs scored and a stolen base. McCord recorded an RBI, while Madisyn Miller had a sacrifice bunt.
  • Alexa Huth was the winning pitcher for the Cougars, throwing a complete game, striking out five batters and allowing five hits.

SAINT FRANCIS 9, GOSHEN 1 (5 INNINGS)

  • After Goshen took an early lead with an RBI single in the top of the first inning, the Cougars responded by tying the game 1-1 with a sacrifice fly from Haylee Schott in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Paiton Iliff began the second inning with a solo home run, putting USF ahead 2-1. Kortney Surber then hit a ground ball to second base, driving in Anna Smith to extend the lead to 3-1.
  • USF plated four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Schott and an RBI double from Iliff.
  • Schott laid down a bunt, forcing an error from the Maple Leafs, allowing Bree Miller to score to give USF the 9-1 run-rule victory to secure the home series sweep of Goshen.
  • The Cougars had 12 hits in game two. Schott and Robakowski both hit 2-2. Schott had a team-high three RBI, a sacrifice fly and a sac bunt, while Robakowski had two runs scored and two walks. Iliff went 2-3 at the plate with a double, a home run and two RBI. 
  • Kennedy Baioni threw all five innings for USF, giving up just four hits and one run.
