FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team swept the visiting Trojans of Taylor University in a home doubleheader for the Cougars on Wednesday, Thursday, 27.
The Cougars rallied for a walk-off win in game one before dominating in game two for a 10-1 run-rule victory.
SAINT FRANCIS 7, TAYLOR 6
- After the Trojans jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, sophomore catcher Paiton Iliff hit a two-run home run with two outs on the board to cut Taylor's lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third.
- Taylor responded with a two-run single in the fourth inning, extending their lead back to four runs. In that same inning, Madyson Minnich hit a double to center field, driving in a run and making the score 6-3.
- Abby Robakowski led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double to left center. Macie Dowd followed with a single to center field, scoring Robakowski and bringing the Cougars within two runs. USF took advantage of an error by the Trojans to drive in another run before Iliff hit an RBI single to tie the game at 6-6.
- The Cougars' defense prevented the Trojans from retaking the lead in the top of the seventh inning.
- In the bottom of the seventh, another lead-off double from Robakowski put a runner in scoring position for USF. With two outs, Minnich stepped into the box and hit a double down the right field line, driving in the winning run and giving Saint Francis a walk-off 7-6 victory in game one.
- As a team, the Cougars recorded 11 hits and nine walks. Iliff went 2-4 at the plate with a home run and three RBI. Robakowski hit 3-5 with three doubles and two runs scored. Minnich had two RBI, while Dowd went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI and two walks.
- Mady Tompkins earned the win in the circle for the Cougars, keeping the Trojans off the scoreboard for 3.1 innings of relief.
SAINT FRANCIS 10, TAYLOR 1 (5 INNINGS)
- The Trojans took an early lead, plating a run in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 advantage.
- Brooklyn McCord and Lena Viggiano drove in two runs in the bottom of the second inning, giving Saint Francis a one-run lead.
- The Cougars added five more runs in the third inning, extending their lead to 7-1, highlighted by two doubles and a single.
- Robakowski started the fourth inning with a home run to give Saint Francis another run, making the score 8-1. Senior Ashley Childress pinch hit in the bottom of the fourth, hitting a ground ball through the right side to score Allison Pavlick and Ashlynn Allman.
- A flyout, a strike out and a line out in the top of the fifth inning kept Taylor from scoring and secured the 10-1 run-rule win for the Cougars.
- USF had 10 hits in game two, with Iliff going 2-2 at the plate with two doubles and two RBI. Robakowski hit her fifth home run and had two walks. Childress and Viggiano both also drove in two runs, while Allison Pavlick and Dowd each had an extra-base hit.
- Alexa Huth earned her seventh win in the circle for the Cougars, striking out four batters and scattering seven hits while giving up no earned runs in five innings pitched.
Up next, the Cougars (16-6, 9-3) will host Goshen College on Friday, March 28. Game one is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. at Westendorf Field.
