UPDATED APRIL 26, 2025 - Saint Francis was credited with two wins by forfeit following a rules violation from Spring Arbor.
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team completed their second conference sweep of the season after earning two wins against Spring Arbor University at Westendorf Field on Tuesday, March 25.
In game one, the USF Cougars held SAU to just one hit in a 4-0 shutout win before outscoring Spring Arbor 8-4 in game two to complete the sweep.
SAINT FRANCIS 4, SPRING ARBOR 0
- After Sam Baker walked and Abby Robakowski hit a single to put two runners on for Saint Francis, Haylee Schott hit a single up the middle to drive in the two baserunners and put USF on top 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning.
- Schott hit another single up the middle to extend Saint Francis's lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning.
- In that same inning, Lena Viggiano was walked with the bases loaded to score Schott and make it a four-run game.
- Spring Arbor got their first hit of the afternoon in the top of the seventh inning, but Saint Francis would keep SAU from scoring as USF secured the 4-0 game one win.
- USF had six hits and four walks in game one. Schott went 2-3 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored. Macie Dowd hit 1-3 with a triple, while Viggiano also drove in a run for Saint Francis.
- Alexa Huth pitched the complete game shutout, striking out nine of the 24 batters she faced while holding SAU to just one hit to improve to 6-0 on the season.
SAINT FRANCIS 8, SPRING ARBOR 4
- Spring Arbor was first to get on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning with an RBI single up the middle.
- With runners on first and second in the bottom of the second inning, Paiton Iliff stepped into the box and hit her third home run of the season to give Saint Francis the lead.
- Kortney Surber then hit a double to center field to drive in a run, followed by Robakowski and Dowd with RBI singles in the second inning to make the score 6-1 in favor of the USF Cougars.
- SAU brought in three runs in the top of the third to cut Saint Francis's lead to 6-3.
- USF took advantage of an SAU error and a sacrifice fly to bring in two more runs, making the score 8-3 in the bottom of the third inning.
- Spring Arbor plated one more run in the top of the fifth but were held scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings as Saint Francis won game two to improve to 7-3 in league play.
- The USF Cougars had eight hits in game two, with Schott going 2-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Surber hit 1-3 with two RBI, a double and a sac fly. Iliff hit 1-2 with a home run and two runs scored, while Dowd also had an RBI.
- Mady Tompkins got the start in the circle for USF, throwing 2.2 innings and scattering six hits.
- Ellie Sauder threw 4.1 innings of relief, striking out four batters and holding SAU to three hits and one run.
Up next, USF softball (14-6, 7-3) will host Taylor University for a Crossroads League doubleheader in Fort Wayne on Wednesday, March 26 starting at 3:00 p.m.
