Cougars Win Six Straight; Close Out Florida Trip with Two Wins
MELBOURNE, Fla. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team concluded their trip to The Space Coast Spring Games with two wins over Cornerstone University and the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Saturday, March 8.
The Cougars defeated the Golden Eagles 6-3 before earning their sixth consecutive win by beating the Wolverines by a final score of 7-5.
SAINT FRANCIS 6, CORNERSTONE 3
- Cornerstone started the game with a 3-0 lead after an RBI double and a two-RBI single in the top of the first inning.
- An RBI single through the left side from Brooklyn McCord put the Cougars on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning.
- Madyson Minnich hit a sac fly, followed by an RBI single to right field from Madisyn Miller to tie the game up 3-3 going into the third inning.
- With two outs in the bottom of the third, Minnich hit an RBI single to right field to score Abby Robakowski and give the Cougars the one-run lead.
- Robakowski flew out to left field, scoring Sam Baker and extending USF's lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- Saint Francis held the Golden Eagles scoreless while scoring another run in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat Cornerstone 6-3 and improve to 6-3 overall on the season.
- USF had 11 hits, with three Cougars going 2-4 at the plate, including Macie Dowd, Haylee Schott and Robakowski. Miller and Minnich both had two RBI, while Minnich also had a stolen base.
- Mady Thompkins got her second win of the season in the circle, striking out seven of the 30 batters she faced while holding the Golden Eagles to five hits in seven innings pitched.
SAINT FRANCIS 7, MICHIGAN-DEARBORN 5
- Miller hit a double to left field to score two runs in the top of the second inning to give USF the 2-0 lead.
- Michigan-Dearborn responded with two runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game up at 2-2.
- Minnich reached first base after hitting a hard ground ball to the left fielder, bringing in Schott to give Saint Francis back the one-run lead.
- The Wolverines tied the score up once again in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI double.
- In the top of the fifth inning, the Cougars plated two more runs to retake the lead thanks to an RBI single from Lillian Pierce and a triple that drove in a run from Minnich.
- Michigan-Dearborn brought the score to 5-5 with two runs scored in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, but Saint Francis responded with two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to give USF back the lead.
- With the score at 7-5 in favor of the Cougars, USF held the Wolverines scoreless in the bottom of the last inning to secure the two-run victory.
- The Cougars finished with 11 hits and four extra-base hits. Pierce and Robakowski both went 2-3 at the plate with a combined five runs scored. Robakowski, Schott and Miller all had doubles, while Minnich had a triple. Pierce had a sac fly and a stolen base.
- Alexa Huth was the starting pitcher for the Cougars, tossing four innings while striking out two batters and scattering four hits.
- Ellie Sauder earned the win after tossing four innings of relief.
Up next, USF softball (7-3) will open Crossroads League play at home with three doubleheaders against Bethel University, Goshen College and Grace College on March 11, March 14 and March 15.
