Cougars Down Eagles and Trojans in Day Two of Florida Trip
MELBOURNE, Fla. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team finished day two of The Space Coast Spring Games with two wins over the University of Fort Lauderdale and Hannibal-LaGrange University on Thursday, March 6.
The Cougars opened Thursday with a 5-0 win over Fort Lauderdale before holding Hannibal-LaGrange off for a 3-1 win to cap off day two.
SAINT FRANCIS 5, FORT LAUDERDALE 0
- Abby Robakowski got the scoring started for the Cougars, driving in two runs with a double to center field to put the Cougars up 2-0 with one out.
- Sophomore Haylee Schott followed with a double of her own to center field to score Robakowski and put USF up 3-0 in the top of the first inning.
- Saint Francis plated two more runs in the seventh inning thanks to an RBI double from Robakowski and an RBI single from Madyson Minnich.
- USF's strong defense and pitching kept UFTL off the scoreboard as the Cougars secured the 5-0 win.
- Alexa Huth threw all seven innings for the Cougars, striking out three batters and scattering six hits while holding the Eagles scoreless.
- Saint Francis had 13 hits as a team. Schott went 3-3 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Robakowski hit 2-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Lena Viggiano also had an extra-base hit. First baseman Macie Dowd and shortstop Brooklyn McCord were involved in a double-play.
SAINT FRANCIS 3, HANNIBAL-LAGRANGE 1
- After a scoreless first inning, Saint Francis capitalized on an error by the Trojans to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
- Hannibal-LaGrange answered by stealing home in the top of the third to tie the score at 1-1.
- Freshman Kortney Surber came in to hit in the bottom of the fourth inning, driving in a run off a hard ground ball to right field to put USF up 2-1.
- McCord hit a single to center to score Schott and extend the Cougars' lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning.
- Saint Francis had 12 hits against the Trojans. Robakowski, Schott, McCord, and Anna Smith all went 2-3 at the plate. Smith had a double in the second inning, while Madisyn Miller hit a triple to center field in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- Kennedy Baioni got the start in the circle, earning a win after holding Hannibal-LaGrange to four hits and one run in 4.0 innings of work.
- Ellie Sauder got the save after throwing 3.0 innings of relief, striking out two batters and holding the other team scoreless.
Up next, USF softball (5-3) will conclude their trip to The Space Coast Spring Games with games against Cornerstone University and the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Saturday, March 8. The Cougars return to Fort Wayne for a Crossroads League doubleheader against Bethel University on Tuesday, March 11.
