Cougs take down the Pilots
FORT WAYNE, Ind. The University of Saint Francis Softball team competed against Bethel University at Westendorf Field, Thursday afternoon in their last home doubleheader of the regular season. The Cougars won Game 1, 6-1 and won Game 2 in extra innings, 1-0.
Kenzie Rust, the junior from Leo, Indiana, gained the start on the mound for the Cougars. Rust pitched 6 innings, resulting in 5 strikeouts and only giving up 6 hits.
Some key highlights from game one included Tori Miller going 2:3 from the plate and hitting a home run early in the 1st inning allowing the Cougars to take the lead, 3-0. USF continued to extend their lead to 5-0 in the 2nd inning, due to Aubrey Dunnuck hitting a home run. Dunnuck went 2:2 from the plate and tallied 2 stolen bases as well. The Cougars continued to find the barrel as Ashlynn Allman singed into left field in the 5th inning, bringing the score to 6-0 in favor of the Cougs. Overall, USF had 6 RBI's, 3 being from Miller, 2 from Dunnuck, & 1 from Allman.
Leading the double header 1-0, the Cougars continued to bring the heat into the second game. Mia Werner, the sophmore from Jasper, Indiana gained the start on the mound for the Cougars. Werner pitched 10 innings which resulting in 3 strikeouts and only 7 hits given up.
Some key highlights from game two included Tori Miller going 1:5 from the plate and hitting a walk off single in the 10th inning allowing the Lady Cougars to clinch the win. Mia Werner also threw the entirety of the game to clinch the dub.
The Cougars will continue their season at 14-20 in the Crossroads League and 20-24 overall. USF will be on the road for their next doubleheader to compete against Bethel University in their last doubleheader of the regular season.
