Cougs Split series with Foresters

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The University of Saint Francis Softball team finished out their home stretch against the Huntington University Foresters at Westendorf Field, Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader. The Cougars won Game 1, 3-2 and lost Game 2, 5-2.

In Game 1, Kenzie Rust earned the start on the mound. Rust struck out 5 batters and gave up only 4 hits. USF got things moving quickly as Macie Dowd singled to rightfield, allowing Aubrey Dunnuck to score in the 1st inning for a 1-0 lead. In the 3rd inning, Macie Dowd doubled once again found the sweet spot in her bat, doubling to centerfield, and advancng Dunnuck home once more for yet another RBI. Dani Karr then singled, allowing Macie Dowd to score.

Key at bats for the Cougs included Macie Dowd going 2:3 from the plate, Aubrey Dunnuck going 2:2 from the plate, and Brooklyn McCord going 1:4. Dani Karr and Abi Erwin both went 1:2 from the plate, and Tori Miller and Carly Turner both went 1:3 from the plate. The Cougars also tallied up 3 RBI's, 2 being from Macie Dowd and 1 being from Dani Karr.

In Game 2, Mia Werner earned her start on the mound, striking out 5 batters and giving up 10 hits. In the 1st inning, Tori Miller reached on an error by Goshen's centerfielder, allowing Brooklyn McCord to advance home. In the 3rd inning, the Lady Cougars tried to come back with Aubrey Dunnuck homering to left field. The Cougar offense stalled out at this point as the Goshen defense worked to clean up mistakes from the previous game to ensure a split series.

Macie Dowd went 1:2 from the plate with, Brenna Homan and Brooklyn McCord both going 1:3 from the plate, and Aubrey Dunnuck went 1:4 from the plate. USF also tallied up 2 total RBI's from Aubrey Dunnuck and Tori Miller.

The Cougars will continue their season at 6-16 in the Crossroads League and a 12-20 overall. USF will be traveling for their next doubleheader to compete on the road against No. 20-Ranked Mount Vernon Nazarene University. The Cougs will play #20 Mount Vernon Nazarene Tuesday (April 18th) with 3pm & 5pm start times in Mount Vernon, Ohio for a lengthly drive.
