Cougars Split series with Maple Leaf's
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The University of Saint Francis Softball team continued their home stretch against the Crossroad League competitor Goshen College at Westendorf Field, Friday afternoon in a doubleheader. The Lady Cougars won Game 1, 7-5 and lost Game 2, 8-4.
In Game 1, Kenzie Rust gained the start on the mound striking out 6 batters and gave up 8 hits. In the 1st inning, the Cougars caught their footing with Tori Miller doubling into left field allowing both Macie Dowd and Brooklyn McCord to advance home for a 2-0 lead. Anna Smith also singled to the pitcher, allowing Aubrey Dunnuck to advance to third base and Tori Miller to advance to home for a 3-0 lead. TUSF continued to bring the heat into the 3rd inning with Aubrey Dunnuck hitting a 2-run homerun. In the 4th inning, Paiton Iliff also hit a home run. In the 5th inning Abi Erwin was also able to find the sweet spot in her bat, ingling to a leftfield.
Aubrey Dunnuck went 3:3 from the plate, with Macie Dowd going 2:3 from the plate; and Tori Miller, Anna Smith, and Abi Erwin all went 1:3 from the plate. The Cougars tallied up 7 total RBI's from Paiton Iliff, Anna Smith, and Abi Erwin all tallying 1 each and Tori Miller and Aubrey Dunnuck both tallying two each.
In Game 2 Mia Werner earned her start on the mound, striking out 2 batters and giving up only 5 hits. The Lady Cougars got the lead early in the game with Tori Miller homering allowing both her and Brooklyn McCord to score. USF continued to deal with the heat and put up a fight in the 5th inning. Tori Miller's single earned her an RBI and the couagrs another run onthe board, all while advancing runners into scoring position.
Macie Dowd came in to pitch relief to allow Kenzie Rust to warm up to pitch again. Kenzie Rust struck out 2 batters and only gave up 10 hits. Brooklyn McCord and Tori Miller both went 2:3 from the plate and Abi Erwin went 1:3 from the plate. The Cougars will continue their season at 5-15 in the Crossroads League and a 11-19 overall.
USF will be finishing their home stretch for their next doubleheader to compete against Huntington University. The Cougars will play Huntington University today (April 15th) with 1pm & 3pm start times. The Huntington University Foresters are currently 14-19 overall and 9-13 in the Crossroads League.
