Lady Cougs Struggle in Goshen Series
GOSHEN, Ind. – The University of Saint Francis Softball team traveled to Goshen, Indiana to take on Crossroads League competitor Goshen College. The Lady Cougs played at the Goshen College Softball Complex for the Crossroads League doubleheader. The Lady Cougars lost both games in the series dropping Game 1, 10-0 and Game 2, 6-4.
In Game 1, Mia Werner earned the start on the mound striking out 1 batter and only giving up one hit. The Lady Cougars had a tough time finding their footing in the game with only mustering up 6 hits. Anna Smith went 2:3 from the plate, Abi Erwin and Brooklyn McCord both went 1:3 from the plate, and Paiton Iliff and Dani Karr both went 1:2 from the plate to total the 6 hits for the Lady Cougars.
Kenzie Rust came in to pitch very early in the game, mustering up 5 strikeouts & only 8 hits given up.
In Game 2, Erika Turpin earned her start on the mound, striking out 5 batters and giving up 8 hits in her 6 innings pitched. The Lady Cougars put up a good fight and gained their footing in the 3rd inning with Freshman Macie Dowd hitting her first home run of the season, & scoring the first runfor the Lady Cougs in the series. In the 5th inning, Freshman Mady Minnich continued to bring the heat, tripling and gaining herself an RBI with Brenna Homan advancing to home. Paiton Iliff and Mady Minnich both stole a base with Minnich's stolen base earning the Lady Cougs another run. Continuing to bring the heat in the 5th inning, Dani Karr singled with Paiton Iliff advancing to home and scoring another run for the Lady Cougars. Brooklyn McCord went 2:3 from the plate and Brenna Homan went 1:3 from the plate.
Kenzie Rust came in again to relieve in the bottom of the sixth, striking out 1 batter and giving up no hits.
The Lady Cougars will continue their season at 1-11 in the Crossroads League and a 5-15 overall. USF will be at home for their next doubleheader to compete against Crossroads League competitor, Grace College. The Lady Cougars will play Grace College Saturday (April 1st) with 1pm & 3pm start times. The Grace College Lancers are currently 3-9 in the Crossroads League and 4-13 overall and on a 6-game losing streak.
