Lady Cougs Swept by the Foresters

HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The University of Saint Francis Softball team traveled to Huntington, Indiana to to face off with Crossroads League competitor Huntington University. The Lady Cougars lost both games in the series dropping Game 1, 9-4 and Game 2, 11-8.
In Game 1, Kenzie Rust earned the start on the mound for the Lady Cougars tallying no strikeouts in the 6 hits given up. In the 5th inning, Taylor Horsley pinch hit and singled into right field allowing Aubrey Dunnuck to advance to third and Ashlynn Allman advancing home, giving the Lady Cougars their first run of the game. In the 6th inning, Paiton Iliff slammed one to the fences, tallying 3 RBI's with Brooklyn McCord and Brenna Homan advacinging home. Paiton Iliff went 2:1 from the plate. Ashlynn Allman and Taylor Horsley both went 1:1 from the plate as well.
Mia Werner came in to pitch in the 2nd inning. Werner tallied 5 strikeouts in her 5 innings pitched and only walked one batter.
In Game 2, Erika Turpin earned the start on the mound. Turpin struck out 1 batter and gave up 8 hits. The Lady Cougars took the lead early in the 1st inning with Tori Miller reaching on a fielders choice, advancing Aubrey Dunnuck home on an error in the field. Abby Erwin singled to center field in the 1st as well, earning 2 RBI's & advancing Macie Dowd and Paiton Iliff home.
The Lady Cougars scored in 4 of the 7 innings played, but were unable to hold off the Foresters huge 2nd inning to rally back and carry momentum through for the win. Key players for the Lady Cougs in Game 2 included Abby Erwin tallying 3 RBI's, Macie Dowd with 2 RBI's, along with Dunnuck and Miller also tallying 1 RBI a-piece. Aubrey Dunnuck also had 2 stolen bases.Kenzie Rust came in to relieve Turpin and faced 17 batters tallying only 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.
The Lady Cougars will continue their season at 1-3 in the Crossroads League and a 5-7 overall. USF will host their home opener tomorrow (March 22) against No. 23-Ranked Marian University. USF will host the Knights at Westendorf field for projected start times of 3pm & 5pm. The Marian University Knights are currently 4-0 in the Crossroads League and 15-1 overall and on a 15 game winning streak.
