MELBOURNE, Fla.- The University of Saint Francis Softball team continued their stay down in Melbourne, Florida for the USSSA Softball Regional Tournament. In the last game of this six game Regional series stretch, the Lady Cougs competed at Pride Stadium, against Cornerstone University (Mich.). USF won against its Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opponent, 5-4.
Erika Turpin earned the start on the mound for the Cougars, striking out 2 batters and only giving up 5 hits in the first 5 innings. Scoring for the Lady Cougars began in the 3rd inning. The Lady Cougs took the lead in the 3rd inning due to Brooklyn McCord singling in the top of the 3rd resulting in Paiton Iliff to score. Paige Oldham also scored due to an error in center field. In the top of the 3rd, Macie Dowd stole secondbase and Carly Turner stole home resulting in another run scored. In the top of the 8th, Abby Erwin singled to center field and Carly Turner scored for the second time. In the top of the 9th, Paiton Illif singled to left field and Aubrey Dunnuck scored, resulting in the Lady Cougars scoring 5 runs throughout the 9-inning game. Brooklyn McCord went 2:5 from the plate with 1 RBI, Paiton Iliff, Anna Smith, and Abby Erwin all went 1:4 from the plate with Iliff and Erwin both tallying an RBI, Macie Dowd went 1:2, and Aubrey Dunnuck went 1:1 from the plate.
Kenzie Rust came in for the save in the 6th inning. Rust tallied 2 strikeouts and only gave up 3 hits and 1 run. Out of her 43 pitches thrown, Rust tallied 10 balls, & 33 strikes.
The Lady Cougars will return back to the Midwest for a match-up with the Huntignton University Foresters, Tuesday March 21. First pitch will begin at 3pm at HU Softball Field in Huntington, Indiana. The Lady Cougars will also compete with No. 23-Ranked, Marian University Wednesday March 22nd for their home opener. The Lady Cougars will compete with Goshen College at a later date to be announced.
