Lady Cougars Drop their Season Opener with Cross-Town Rival

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The University of Saint Francis Softball team traveled across town to take on the Indiana Tech Warriors at Warrior Park, Thursday afternoon. The Cougars lost both games in the series dropping Game 1, 7-1 and Game 2, 13-10.
The Lady Cougars competed the first three innings of the first game of the doubleheader with Indiana Tech. Kenzie Rust, a junior from Leo, Indiana earned the start on the mound for USF. Rust threw for the entire game and tallied 6 innings pitched resulting in 7 strikeouts, but also giving up 7 runs off 10 hits.
The third inning in Game 1 was huge for Indiana Tech and detrimental to the Cougars being in a 6-1 deficit. Anna Smith was 2:3 from the plate and earned an RBI for the Cougs for their one run of the game in the 5th inning.
Trailing the series 0-1, the Lady Cougars bounced back in Game 2 to a 7-0 lead. Paiton Iliff was 2:3 from the plate recording two walks. Anna Smith and Taylor Horsley were both 2:4 from the plate and Horseley recorded 3RBIs from her two hits. Smith recorded 1 RBI on her two hits at the plate. Abi Erwin and Ashley Childress also went 1:2 at the plate recording 1 RBI a-piece.
The Cougars were not able to hold onto the lead from the Warriors due to some hot swinging bats on the hosts side. Mia Werner went on to pick up the loss for USF in her 3.1 innings pitched. Werner gave up 10 runs on 12 hits, but recorded 2 strikeouts to highlight her innings. Kenzie Rust came in for the potential save for the Cougs. But was unable to do so in her 2.2 innings pitched, tallying 1 strikeout. Rust also allowed 3 runs from 8 hits.
The Lady Cougars will start their season off blanked at 0-2 overall. USF will be on the road for their next few doubleheaders traveling to Cocoa, Florida to compete in the USSSA Space Coast Florida Regional. The Lady Cougars will play Cleary University (Mich.) & Culver-Stockton (MO) March 9th with 9am & 2pm start times.
