Cougars Celebrate Senior Day by Sweeping Spring Arbor
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – On Saturday afternoon, the University of Saint Francis Cougars (17-14; 9-10 Crossroads) played host to the Spring Arbor University Cougars (12-21; 6-16 Crossroads) in a doubleheader at Westendorf Field and swept both games by scores of 11-1 and 7-3.
In addition to Saturday's doubleheader, the Cougars also celebrated Senior Day by recognizing six individuals whose efforts and contributions have been a positive asset to the Cougars during their tenures: Grace Renbarger, Ronnie Hudson, Elandra Shafer, Paige Warneke, Regan Peppler, and Dory Thompson.
In the opening game, freshman Mia Werner took the mound to start for the Cougars, and after retiring the side in the first, her teammates went to work for her in the bottom of the opening frame.
With two runners on and one out, catcher Tori Miller sparked the Cougars with a three-run home run over the left field wall to give Werner a 3-0 lead to work with.
Come the bottom of the second the Cougars went back to work. This time with two outs third baseman Dani Karr drove home the fourth run for Saint Francis with an RBI-double, and then second baseman Abby Erwin slammed a two-run home run to make the score 6-0.
Two more runs in the bottom of the third, and then a two-run home run by designated hitter Regan Peppler was more than enough for Werner to finish off Spring Arbor.
The freshman hurler went back out for the fifth, and despite surrendering a solo home run, retired the side to complete the win as the Cougars won the first game 11-1 after five innings via mercy rule. She allowed just one run on seven hits through five innings pitched while allowing just one walk.
In the finale, senior pitcher Ronnie Hudson started on the mound for Saint Francis, and did run into some trouble in the top of the second as Spring Arbor plated three runs capped by a two-run triple, but the senior hurler settled in after that.
Meanwhile, her teammates went to work with the bats in the bottom of the second when with one out, Anna Smith and Dory Thompson had consecutive RBI-hits to bring Saint Francis to within a run.
Then in the bottom of the third, they took the lead for good as they took advantage of a couple fielding error by Spring Arbor to score three runs and take a 5-3 lead.
On the mound, Hudson continued to work, and was relieved by sophomore Erika Turpin in the fourth, who pitched brilliantly to keep the Cougars in the lead. Then two more runs in the bottom of the fifth sealed the deal for the Cougars as they prevailed 7-3 and earn the sweep.
The Cougars resume play on Monday afternoon when they travel to Indianapolis, Indiana for a tough doubleheader against the Marian University Knights (26-6; 16-5 Crossroads) beginning at 3:00 pm.
