Cougars Drop League Opener to Lancers

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - A late strike lifted No. 22 Grace College past the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) men's soccer team by a final score of 1–0 on Wednesday, September 24 at 1st Source Bank Field. 

The tightly contested Crossroads League matchup remained scoreless for over 75 minutes, with both defenses holding strong. Grace controlled much of the action, outshooting the Cougars 24–5 and piling up 13 corner kicks, but SF goalkeeperKevin Wachiaya Oneliuskept his side alive with four saves. 

The breakthrough finally came in the 78th minute when Diego Yanes found the back of the net unassisted, notching his team-leading goal and breaking the deadlock. 

Saint Francis had a few chances of their own, including four shots on target, but Grace keeper Pedro Galante was sharp in net, recording four saves to preserve the clean sheet, extending their unbeaten streak to six matches and improving to 8-1-2 on the season and 2-0-0 in league play.

Saint Francis (2-8-1, 0-2-0 CL) will look to bounce back in their next conference contest on Saturday, September 27, against Spring Arbor University. Saturday will also be homecoming at Bishop John M. D'Arcy Stadium, with the Cougars set to kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
