FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) men's soccer team dropped a close battle with the visiting Marian University Knights on Saturday, October 19.
The Knights, who are receiving votes in the NAIA poll and are currently in second in the Crossroads League standings, won Saturday's matchup by a final score of 3-2.
Unax Mendia put the Cougars on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 19th minute of play, assisted by Mika Leib. The Knights answered with a goal of their own to tie the score at 1-1. Saint Francis and Marian battle back and forth in the remaining 22 minutes of action in the first half, with both teams combining for 12 shots and five first-half corner kicks.
Marian scored their second goal at the 55:14 mark to take the 2-1 lead. Christian Walter responded with his sixth goal of the season in the 79th minute to even the score at 2-2. Leib picked up his second assist of the night on the goal. As time ran down, the Knights were able to score in the 87th minute and hold off the Cougars for the 3-2 win.
As a team, Saint Francis took 12 total shots, including shots on goal from Enrique Subiran, Leib, Walter and Mendia. Jannik Reiss faced eight shots on goal on Saturday, making five saves during 90 minutes in goal for Saint Francis.
Up next, USF men's soccer (7-8-1, 1-5-1) will travel to Spring Arbor Univerity for their final road trip of the regular season on October 26.
