Cougars Score Program Record 10 Goals in First Half En Route to 11-0 Win Over Carlow Celtics
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - On Saturday afternoon the University of Saint Francis Cougars (3-0-1) traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to take on the Carlow University Celtics (0-1-0) and backed by a club record 10 goals in the first half, dominated their way to an 11-0 victory.
Right out of the gate, the Cougars picked up where they left off on Wednesday night with a 5-0 shutout over the Calumet St. Joseph Crimson Wave. Just 95 seconds into the match, sophomore midfielder Simon Hemler got the ball off a rebound and knocked it through to break open the scoring for Saint Francis.
Junior midfielder Enrique Subiran then got the ball from freshman midfielder Alessandro Bazan in the 15th minute to double the score with his third goal of the season. Subiran then added a second just seven minutes later, and the Cougars kept pressing.
By the 28th minute the Cougars had extended their lead to six goals and sent a whole line of substitutions into the game. Those subs then stepped right in and didn't skip a beat as junior forward Nahuel Suarez scored a third Cougar goal in under three minutes, likewise to the other night when Daniel Eleuterio did it in under two minutes all by himself.
The Cougars then allowed each of their goalies some time in net as Saint Francis continued building its lead over the Celtics. By halftime, the Cougars had 10 goals with Subiran, Suarez, and sophomore midfielder Yann Fattouh each scoring two apiece.
Coming into the second half, one final goal was scored just 75 seconds into the frame, this time by senior forward Ivan Altimirano as the Cougars cruised to an 11-0 win and third shutout of the season.
"It is always nice to get results on the road after a long trip," Head Coach Jake Essig said. "The lads are playing unselfish right now and that will pay dividends down the road."
Throughout the match, the Cougars totaled 19 shots on goal, 33 shots total, and 11 goals, against just one save needed from freshman goalkeeper Joe Deitering.
The Cougars resume play on Wednesday evening when they travel to Adrian, Michigan to face the Adrian College Bulldogs (0-1) beginning at 7:00 pm.
