FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The (RV) University of Saint Francis (Ind.) men's basketball team downed the visiting Goshen College Maple Leafs by a final score of 84-67 on Wednesday, January 29.
Goshen won the tip-off and scored the first basket of the night, but USF quickly responded with a jump shot, tying the game at 2-2. The Cougars then scored on consecutive possessions, taking a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. A layup at the 6:11 mark of the first half extended USF's lead to 36-19. The Maple Leafs attempted to respond but were unable to reduce the deficit to fewer than 10 points. The Cougars went into the locker room leading 47-24 at halftime.
Isaiah Malone kicked off the second half with a dunk, extending the Cougars' lead to its highest point of the night, 49-24. The Cougars maintained their offensive efficiency, shooting 44% from the field and going 11 of 12 from the free-throw line during the second half. Saint Francis scored 37 points in the second half, securing an 84-67 victory over the Maple Leafs and improving their conference record to 8-3.
The Cougars shot 54.7% from the floor and 42.9% from three-point range, compared to Goshen's 23.3 three-point shoot percentage on Wednesday night. USF also outrebounded the Maple Leafs 34-19. Luke Almodovar shot 10-16 from the floor as the sophomore guard collected 28 points. Almodovar also dished out four assists and pulled down four rebounds. D'Amare Hood came off the bench and made four of six three-point attempts en route to 22 points. Malone finished 14 points, five rebounds and two blocks.
Up next, USF men's basketball (15-6, 8-3) will travel to No. 18 Huntington University on February 1. The Cougars beat the Foresters 89-65 in their first matchup of the season back in December.
