Men’s Hoops takes down MVNU amidst snow storm
With Kyle Kegley of MVNU out, the Cougars were able to get the ball inside the paint. MVNU sat in a zone for a few possessions against USF, which did not help their case at all. USF led at the half 29-21, and only shot 36% from the field and 40% from the foul line in the first half.
MVNU had a 9-0 start in the second half to take the 30-29 lead due to a sluggish USF side. Turnovers from the Cougars helped MVNU transition and capitalize to an 11-1 deficit in points scored within the first 4-minutes of the half.
Antwaan Cushingberry broke the all-time scoring record for USF Men's Hoops, which also catapulted the USF Cougars past MVNU for the dub. Key contributors obviously included Cushingberry's (18 points) shift in momentum by surpassing the all-time scoring record along with his clutch 3-pointer with 32 seconds remaining in the game.
Brandon Northern picked up a technical directly after, awarding MVNU 2 free throws. Trent Koning of MVNU hit a corner 3 cutting the lead down to 1 with 21 seconds remaining. The Cougars finished off shooting 44% from the field and 74% from the foul line.
Key contributors to the win included Dan McKeeman's 15 points, 3 boards, and one assist. Zane Burke contributed a quiet 12 points and 7 rebounds. Evan Lowden also finished the game off with 12 points, and 2 clutch foul shots with 15 seconds remaining to secure the win.
The Cougars are now 12-10 overall and 5-7 in conference. USF will travel to Upland, Ind. Saturday January 28th to take on the Taylor Trojans. Tip-off is set for 3pm in Odle Arena, right after the women's game. USF dropped their last contest with the Trojans 73-82.
