NAIA Player of the Year: Nick Ferrer
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. University of Saint Francis quarterback Nick Ferrer has been chosen 2017 NAIA Football Player of the Year revealed at the NAIA Banquet of Champions Friday night as part of the NAIA Banquet of Champions at the Plaza Resort & Spa.
"I am truly amazed and humbled to receive this award," Ferrer said. "I want to thank my big guys up front. This is a
recognition of our team and our accomplishments. I accept this award for my teammates and coach D (Kevin Donley). It is a dream come true, a tribute to Coach D and our coaching staff and our team."
The USF senior (Westfield, Ind. / Westfield H.S.) has led the 13-0 Cougars back to the NAIA Football Championship Series title game on Sat., Dec. 16, at Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach, Fla. Ferrer is No. 2 on the NAIA career passing touchdowns list with 135 (No. 1 in the MSFA) and he is No. 5 on the NAIA career passing yardage list with 12,265 yards. Ferrer is just 89 yards away from passing No. 4 Jon Kitna (Central Washington 1992-95) at 12,353 yards.
The 6-foot-4, 230-pound right-hander is the first USF QB to be selected NAIA POTY joining RB Cory Jacquay (2004) and linebacker Brian Kurtz (2006) on the USF NAIA POTY list.
A two-time Mid-States Football Association Mideast League Player-of-the-Year in 2015 and 2017, Ferrer has led USF to 22 consecutive wins at quarterback, a USF record, and that includes the 2016 NAIA FCS Championship.
He is 38-4 as the USF starting QB starting every USF game from the start of the 2015 season. Ferrer leads the MSFA in passing yards, pass completion percentage, pass efficiency, yards per game (301.9), TD passes (38), pass completions (288), passes attempted (423) and tied for fewest interceptions with four.
He was a 2016 NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete and a 2017 CoSIDA All-Academic Team nominee.
A USF business administration major, Ferrer is the son of Dave and Kim.
