Silver Helmet to Tierney

University of Saint Francis senior quarterback Shaine Tierney was named winner of the 2010 Silver Helmet Award at the annual USF Football Awards Banquet on Sunday (Feb. 13) and the Landmark Conference and Reception Centre.

The Silver Helmet Award is voted on by the USF coaching staff and the criteria are based on leadership, coachability and scholarship.

Stats wise, Shaine finished as the USF career passing percentage leader at .671 passing previous record holder Jeff Wedding (.548). Tierney, a native of Stevensville, MI and a Lakeshore High School graduate, completed 478-712-20 passing. He finished with 5,708 yards passing ranks No. 3 on the USF list, 16th on the Mid-States Football Association career list. His 34 career TD passes rank No. 4 on the USF list and he averaged 135.9 yards passing for his career.

He missed the MSFA career completion record by 1/100th of a percent, .672 by Cris Reisert (ODU 2005-08).

His 2010 completion percentage .679 led the MSFA and set a USF single-season record for a second consecutive season. Tierney was 18-4 in 22 collegiate starts for USF.

USF Head Coach Kevin Donley also announced that USF graduate Taylor Vieck, who was the USF NAIA Champion of Character selection for the NAIA Football Championship Series, is a finalist for the Thomas A. Brady Comeback Scholarship Award.

Among the dignitaries attending this season wrap-up event were Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry and Jim Shields, the founder of WaterFurnace International. More than 300 attended the banquet on Sunday afternoon.

The Cougars finished 10-2 in their 13th season and No. 5 in the final NAIA post-season Top 25, the 141st consecutive Top 25 selection for USF. The USF 2011 Blue and White Spring Game is schedule for Sun., April 17 with kickoff at 1 p.m.
