Saint Francis Upsets No. 16 Huntington in Doubleheader Sweep
HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) baseball team put together two strong performances to upset No. 16 Huntington University on Saturday, March 28. The Cougars won game one 10-9 before running away with game two 10-3.
SAINT FRANCIS 10, HUNTINGTON 9
- After Huntington took an early 3-1 lead, Saint Francis put together a big sixth inning, driving in seven runs for a 7-3 advantage.
- The Foresters responded in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to retake the lead, with the score at 8-7.
- SF retook the lead in the top of the ninth inning, bringing in runs off a wild pitch and a triple to right center.
- The Cougars outlasted Huntington in the back-and-forth battle and held off a late Huntington push to secure the one-run victory.
- Saint Francis totaled 10 hits and four walks during Saturday's first game. Ayden Lichtensteiger and Jordan Davis hit 2-4, combining for three RBI. Davis, Kasen Oribello and Zavier Edgar all had extra-base hits. Edgar, Jack Belschner, Cole Kintz, Steven Drewyor and Ashten Tuttle all drove in a run.
- On the mound, Jayden Nuber, Andrew Zellers, Bryce Adams, Brock Bowser and Andrew Onuegbu combined for 11 strikeouts. The Cougars' pitching staff held the Foresters to six hits while giving up 11 walks.
SAINT FRANCIS 10, HUNTINGTON 3
- Saint Francis carried momentum into game two, pulling ahead 6-1 after the first four innings.
- The Cougars added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 10-1.
- SF held Huntington to three runs in game two to secure the sweep.
- The Cougars recorded 14 hits with seven walks in game two. Zellers went 4-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Lichtensteiger hit 2-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored. Belschner had Edgar each drove in a run and combined for three stolen bases.
- Dawson French struck out six batters while holding Huntington to two hits and no earned runs in 6.0 innings pitched.
Next up, Saint Francis (12-20, 10-10 cl) will hit the road next week as they travel to take on No. 3 Taylor University on April 2 and April 4.
