Cougars Battle Brewton-Parker and Bryan in Four Game Weekend

DAYTON, Tenn. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) baseball team traveled to Tennessee for four games against Brewton–Parker Christian University and Bryan College on February 20-21. 

The Cougars split their games on Friday, rallying for a comeback victory over Brewton-Parker 5-4 in game one before falling short in game two against Bryan 13-11. On Saturday, Saint Francis dropped both games, falling to the Barons 16-1 and to the Lions 13-3.

SAINT FRANCIS 5, BREWTON-PARKER 4

  • The Cougars opened Saturday with a gritty 5-4 comeback win over Brewton-Parker College.
  • After trailing 4-2 through the first three innings, Saint Francis responded with a solo shot over the left field fence from Xavier Nolan to bring the Cougars within one in the seventh inning. 
  • Ayden Lichtensteiger followed with a home run to lead off the bottom half of the ninth inning to tie the game up. Payton Fulton followed with an RBI single to center give Saint Francis the win.
  • Saint Francis totaled nine hits and 13 walks. Nolan finished 3-3 with a home run, two RBI, and two walks. Lichtensteiger also went deep, driving in a pair of runs as part of a two-hit performance. Ashten Tuttle added two hits, including a double, while Xavier Gonsalves and Owen Zimmerman each contributed RBI singles.
  • After Perry Stow and Dawson French combined for five innings of work on the mound, Brock BowserKeaton Blessing and Cameron Alford combined for five strikeouts while holding the Barons to one hit in relief. Nathan Bardwell earned the win after tossing a scoreless ninth inning. 

BRYAN 13, SAINT FRANCIS 11

  • In the afternoon matchup, the Cougars fell in a high-scoring battle to Bryan.
  • Saint Francis grabbed an early lead after hitting two home runs in the top of the second inning, making the score 3-0 in favor of the Cougars. 
  • After Bryan tied the game up in the third and fourth innings, SF responded with two more home runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings to pull ahead 8-3. 
  • The Lions tied the game up again in the bottom half of the sixth and seventh innings with three homers of their own. 
  • In the top of the eighth, Cole Kintz and Zavier Edgar drove in three runs to put the Cougars up 11-8. 
  • Bryan closed out the game with two home runs and a double, scoring five runs in the eighth en route to the 13-11 win.
  • Saint Francis had a strong offensive showing, recording 14 hits, including four homers and three doubles. Lichtensteiger went 2-5 at the plate with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. Tuttle collected three RBI, while AJ Patton also tallied two RBI, and Payton Fulton chipped in three hits.
  • Luke Siren struck out seven over five innings as the SF starter. Bryce Adams took the loss after tossing 0.2 innings. 

BREWTON-PARKER 16, SAINT FRANCIS 1 - 7 INNINGS

  • The Cougars opened Saturday with a loss to Brewton-Parker in seven innings.
  • The Barons took a 9-0 lead after the first four innings. 
  • Lichtensteiger put the Cougars on the board with a sacrifice fly to score Jordan Davis, making the score 9-1 in the top of the fifth inning. 
  • Saint Francis was unable to slow Brewton-Parker's offense as the Barons tallied seven more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win. 
  • The Cougars were held to four hits, with Lichtensteiger, Gonsalves, Tuttle and Davis all recording a hit against the Barons. Lichtensteiger also had a stolen base. 
  • Jaden Markus was credited with the loss after throwing an inning as the starter on the mound for Saint Francis. Markus, Jacob Bardwell, Micah Steury and Carson Hunter combined for seven strikeouts. 

BRYAN 13, SAINT FRANCIS 3 - 7 INNINGS

  • Saint Francis fell to Bryan 13-7 to close out the Cougars' four games in Tennessee on Saturday afternoon.
  • Lichtensteiger opened the game with a home run in the top of the first inning to give SF the 1-0 lead.
  • The Lions responded in the second and third innings, plating seven runs to take a 7-1 lead. 
  • Two runs for Saint Francis in the top of the fourth and fifth innings cut Bryan's lead to four, with the score at 7-3.
  • The Lions scored again in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the 13-3 victory. 
  • Saint Francis recorded five hits and a pair of walks. Lichtensteiger finished with a home run and an RBI. Aslan Nolan had a double, while Xavier Nolan and Steven Drewyor each drove in a run. 
  • Jayden Nuber started on the mound, striking out four batters in four innings. 

Up next, Saint Francis baseball (2-10) will open Crossroads League play with a split-series against Marian University on February 27-28. The Cougars will host the Knights for a doubleheader on Friday before traveling to Indianapolis to close out the four-game series on Saturday.
