Cougars Improve to 6-2 in CL Play With Three Wins at MVNU

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) baseball team earned three wins at Mount Vernon Nazarene University to improve to 6-2 in Crossroads League play.

On Friday, March 7, USF won two games, defeating Mount Vernon Nazarene by final scores of 9-6 and 5-2. Saint Francis and MVNU split Monday's doubleheader, with USF shutting out MVNU 5-0 in game one and Mount Vernon Nazarene winning game two by a final score of 9-7.

SAINT FRANCIS 9, MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE 6

  • USF capitalized on an error by MVNU to put their first run on the board in the top of the first inning. Saint Francis brought in six more runs in the first inning to take the early 7-0 lead. 
  • Another MVNU error in the top of the third allowed Aaron Miranda to score to extend Saint Francis's lead to 8-0. 
  • Mount Vernon Nazarene scored five runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings as MVNU tried to rally, but the USF Cougars would plate another run in the top of the eighth inning to maintain a four-run lead. 
  • MVNU was held to one run in the bottom of the eighth as Saint Francis held on to win game one by a final score of 9-6.
  • USF had seven hits, with Miranda going 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored, a double and an RBI. Xavier Nolan and Jayden Lepper both drove in two runs in game one, while Eli Riley and Kasen Oribello both had stolen bases. 
  • Lukas North started on the mound for USF, striking out three batters and allowing six hits in six innings of work.

SAINT FRANCIS 5, MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE 2 (7 INNINGS)

  • The USF Cougars got on the scoreboard first once again in game two of Friday's doubleheader thanks to a sacrifice fly from Sam Pesa and Oribello scoring on a wild pitch in the first inning. 
  • Mount Vernon Nazarene hit a sac fly and a single in the bottom of the first and second innings to tie the game up 2-2. 
  • After a couple of scoreless innings for both squads, Saint Francis was able to retake the lead in the top of the fifth thanks to a sac fly to center field from AJ Patton
  • The USF Cougars scored again in the sixth inning, this time two runs from a sacrifice fly from Brenden Lytle and an RBI single to left field from Miranda.
  • Saint Francis held Mount Vernon Nazarene scoreless in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to secure the 5-2 win.
  • In game two, USF had five hits. NolanPesa and Miranda all went 1-2 at the plate while Nolan also had a stolen base. 
  • The USF Cougars' starting pitcher Gage Smith threw six innings, striking out four batters and scattering nine hits.
  • Andrew Kent came in for relief, throwing a scoreless seventh inning and giving up one hit. 

SAINT FRANCIS 5, MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE 0

  • With the score at 0-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Pesa hit an RBI single to left field to bring in pinch-runner Gonsalves and give USF the 1-0 lead. Callan Stauffer followed with an RBI walk to make it a two-run game. 
  • Stauffer hit a single to center field, bringing in two more runs to extend Saint Francis's lead to 4-0 in the top of the eighth inning. 
  • A wild pitch scored Nolan with two outs in the ninth inning to bring the score to 5-0. 
  • USF's pitchers Blaine McRae and Bryce Adams held MVNU scoreless as the USF Cougars ended game one on top 5-0.
  • As Saint Francis's starting pitcher, McRae struck out 10 of the 30 batters he faced while holding MVNU to just four hits in seven innings of work. Adams threw two innings of relief, striking out four batters and giving up no hits. 
  • Saint Francis had seven hits as a team. Jayden Lepper hit 2-3 with a run scored, two walks and a stolen base. Stauffer had three RBI, a walk and a hit. 

MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE 9, SAINT FRANCIS 7

  • With two outs in the top of the first inning, Lepper singled to shortstop to score Nolan and put the USF Cougars on the board, with the score at 1-0. 
  • Nolan hit an RBI single to center field in the second inning to put Saint Francis on top 2-0. 
  • After MVNU scored five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead, USF answered with a two-run home run from Oribello to cut Mount Vernon Nazarene's lead to just one run in the top of the fifth inning. 
  • MVNU put together another big inning, scoring four runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 9-4. 
  • A three-run home run from Lepper brought Saint Francis within two, but the USF Cougars' rally would fall short as MVNU won game four 9-7. 
  • Saint Francis had six hits, with Lepper going 3-4 at the plate with four RBI, a run scored and a home run. Oribello drove in two runs and finished 1-4 at the plate. Nolan also had an RBI and a stolen base. 
  • Perry Stow threw three innings on the mound as USF's starting pitcher, striking out three batters and allowing eight hits. Jaden Markus and Cameron Alford came in for relief.

Up next, USF baseball (8-11, 6-2) will host Indiana Wesleyan in the Cougars' home opener on Friday, March 14 and Saturday, March 15.
