Cougars Start League Play with Three Wins Against Marian

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis baseball team picked up three wins in a four-game series against Marian University to begin Crossroads League play on February 28 and March 2. 

Marian won game one of the four-game series with a final score of 8-7. The Cougars won game two on Friday 7-3 before sweeping the Knights on Sunday, with a game one score of 7-3 and a game two score of 5-0.

MARIAN 8, SAINT FRANCIS 7 

  • After the Knights took a 5-1 lead in the first five innings, the Cougars took the lead, with the score at 6-5 at the end of the sixth inning. Three RBI singles from Aaron MirandaCallan Stauffer and Xavier Nolan highlighted the inning for Saint Francis. 
  • MU answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game up at 7-7. 
  • Marian would score again in the bottom of the ninth to win game one by a final score of 8-7. 
  • The Cougars had nine hits in game one against the Knights. Eli Riley and Brenden Lytle both had two hits and stolen bases. Nolan went 3-5 at the plate with two doubles and an RBI. 
  • Lukas North threw 6.1 on the mound as the Cougars' starting pitcher, striking out two batters and giving up eight hits. 
  • Jaden Markus came in for relief, tossing 2.0 innings with a strikeout and a walk. 

SAINT FRANCIS 7, MARIAN 3

  • USF started game two with a 1-0 lead after Sam Pesa scored Nolan in the top of the first inning. 
  • The Cougars plated two more runs in the top of the second thanks to an RBI double from AJ Patton and a sacrifice fly from Kasen Oribello to take the 4-0 lead. 
  • Marian cut Saint Francis's lead to two after scoring two runs in the third and fourth innings. 
  • The Cougars capitalized on errors from the Knights to bring in three runs in the top of the sixth inning. 
  • USF would hold MU to one run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Cougars won game two to split Friday's doubleheader with a score of 7-3.
  • As a team, Saint Francis was held to four hits. Miranda went 1-2 at the plate with a walk and a run scored. Oribello and Patton each had extra-base hits, while Riley had a stolen base.
  • Gage Smith struck out six batters and gave up three hits as the Cougars' starting pitcher. 

SAINT FRANCIS 7, MARIAN 3

  • The Cougars were the first to put a run on the scoreboard, with an RBI walk from Jayden Lepper in the bottom of the first inning. 
  • Patton scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second inning, followed by an RBI single from Lytle in the fourth inning to put the Cougars up 3-0. 
  • The Knights scored on a Saint Francis error to cut USF's lead to two runs in the top of the fifth inning. 
  • Saint Francis answered, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. An RBI single from Pesa, a triple from Lepper and a sac fly from Miranda highlighted the inning for the Cougars.
  • The Knights brought in another run in the top of the seventh to make the score 6-2, but USF answered with another RBI single to pull ahead 7-2. 
  • MU plated another run in the top of the ninth, but Saint Francis stopped the Knights to win the first game of Sunday's doubleheader by a final score of 7-3.
  • USF scattered nine hits in game one. Lepper hit 2-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and a triple. Miranda went 2-4 at the plate with two RBI. Eli Riley had a stolen base and four walks. 
  • Blaine McRae struck out nine of the 26 batters his face in 6.0 innings on the mound for the Cougars. McRae also held MU to just one hit and gave up no earned runs. Andrew Zellers struck out three Knights in 2.0 innings of relief. 

SAINT FRANCIS 5, MARIAN 0

  • Lytle hit an RBI double to put the Cougars on the board in the bottom of the second inning, making the score 1-0. 
  • The Cougars extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning after Stauffer scored on a wild pitch and Riley brought in Patton.
  • Saint Francis plated two more runs in the sixth inning, with Lepper scoring on a balk and Patton hitting an RBI double to make it 5-0.
  • As a team, the Cougars had five hits. Nolan went 1-2 from the plate with an RBR, a double and a stolen base. Lytle was 1-2 with a double, a walk and a stolen base. Lepper and Stauffer also had stolen bases in game two.
  • Perry Stow got the start on the mound for the Cougars, striking out six batters and holding Marian to one hit in 5.0 innings of work.

Up next, USF baseball (5-10, 3-1) will travel to Mount Vernon Nazarene for doubleheaders on March 7 and March 8.
