Cougars Fall to No. 11 Southeastern in Three-Game Road Series
LAKELAND, Fla. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) baseball team traveled to No. 11 Southeastern University for a three-game series against the Fire on February 14-15.
The Cougars fell to the Fire by a final score of 6-3 and 3-1 on Friday before dropping a hard-fought battle to Southeastern on Saturday by a final score of 13-9 in 10 innings.
#11 SOUTHEASTERN 6, SAINT FRANCIS 3
- Southeastern was first to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning with a sacrifice fly to center field to take the 1-0 lead.
- Saint Francis answered to take the lead thanks to two homers from Eli Riley and Callan Stauffer in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- After the Fire tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the fifth, Riley hit another home run to give the Cougars back the lead.
- Southeastern brought in four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- USF was unable to put a rally together as the Fire went on to win game one.
- The Cougars had eight hits in game one of Friday's doubleheader. Riley went 2-5 from the plate with two home runs and two RBI. Stauffer hit 2-2 with a home run and two walks. Kasen Oribello was 2-4 from the plate with a double and a walk.
- Lukas North got the start on the mound for the Cougars, holding the Fire to three hits while striking out five batters in five innings of work.
#11 SOUTHEASTERN 3, SAINT FRANCIS 1
- Saint Francis held the Fire scoreless through the first three innings and took a 1-0 lead thanks to Riley's third homer of the day in the top of the second.
- Southeastern scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the 2-1 lead.
- The Fire went on to score again in the fifth inning while keeping the Cougars scoreless to secure the 3-1 win in game two.
- The Cougars had five hits in game two, with Riley going 2-4 from the plate with a home run. Brenden Lytle and Stauffer each had a hit and a stolen base.
- Luke Siren, the starting pitcher for USF, threw 4.1 innings, striking out two batters and allowing four hits.
#11 SOUTHEASTERN 13, SAINT FRANCIS 9 (10 INNINGS)
- USF opened Saturday's game with an RBI double for an early 1-0 lead.
- The Cougars scored again in the fourth and fifth innings thanks to home runs from Sam Pesa and Ayden Lichtensteiger.
- A sac fly from Evan Pearce and another home run brought the score to 5-0 in favor of Saint Francis.
- Southeastern got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning, cutting USF's lead to three runs.
- An RBI single in the top of the ninth gave Saint Francis an 8-4 lead, but the Fire responded to tie the score at 8-8 and force extra innings.
- In the top of the tenth, the Cougars plated a run to make it 9-8.
- Southeastern also scored in the bottom of the tenth to win game three by a final score of 13-9.
- As a team, USF had 11 hits. Riley and Oribello both went 2-3 at the plate with a double each. Xavier Nolan, Pesa and Lichtensteiger each had home runs, with Nolan leading the Cougars with three RBI and a stolen base. Xavier Gonsalves also had a stolen base after coming in to pinch run.
- Gage Smith threw 6.1 innings as the Cougars' starter, scattering six hits, striking out six batters and giving up one earned run.
Up next, USF baseball (1-6) will travel to Georgia for games against Georgia Gwinnett and OUAZ on February 21-22.
